Sunday win over Irmo, S.C. completes sweep at Shelby
By STEVE KAY, LTN correspondent
SHELBY—Cherryville Post 100 continued to mow down the opposition over the weekend with a three-game sweep in the Shelby Invitational at Keeter Field.
Teams from Sumter, S.C., Irmo, S.C., and 2002 Southeast Regional champion Dothan, Ala., played Cherryville, host Shelby and Caldwell County in a round-robin format.
Post 100 (7-4 division, 10-4 overall) completed its 3-0 weekend Sunday with a 16-7 win over Irmo. On Friday, Post 100 handed Dothan, 19-0 entering the tournament, its first loss by an
8-1 count. Saturday afternoon, Post 100 edged Sumter 4-2.
Post 100 coach Bobby Reynolds experimented with his lineup throughout the weekend, especially in the Irmo game.
Shane Summer, making his first pitching appearance ever, started on the mound but did not last long. He retired only one batter before yielding to Travis Walls, who pitched out of a
deep hole after Irmo plated four runs on five hits against Summer.
Post 100 tied the game in the second inning, with Josh McSwain and Jay Heafner picking up RBI hits.
The Area-Four Western Division leader then took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning on Brock Alexander’s double to right center.
With Walls controlling Irmo’s offense, Post 100 poured it on with a five-run scoring flurry in the fourth inning.
After Cherryville loaded the bases on a hit by Johnathan Walker and walks to Heafner and Chris Mason, Alexander drove in two more runs to hike his RBI total for the game to four.
Later in the same inning, Walls hit a three-run homer over the left field fence to make the score 11-4.
Walls was relieved by Chris Christenson in the fifth, and the lefthander allowed only one run over the next two innings.
Meanwhile, Cherryville added two more runs in the sixth inning, one of them on a hit by Walker, who had four for the game.
Reynolds subbed freely in the late innings. Chris Halubka, in a warm-up for his next .pitching start, worked two scoreless innings, and Jason Hammonds finished up in the ninth.
Post 100 returns to division play tonight at home with a makeup game against Lake Norman. The starting time is 7:30.
On Tuesday, Cherryville travels to Hendersonville.
Post 100 notes: Outfielder Brandon Hurt may be out of the lineup for a few games after fouling a pitch off his ankle on Saturday. The ankle is bruised, but there are no
broken bones. … David Wise hit his sixth homer of the season in Sunday’s game. He leads the team in that category.
