Cherryville Post 100 pitcher Justin McLeymore got the save in the ninth to secure the win Sunday at Eastern Catawba.

Asheville rallies late to beat Post 100, 9-4

June 5, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — A brutal stretch of six games in six days finally caught up with Cherryville.

 Post 100 looked listless in the field and at the plate in dropping a 9-4 decision Tuesday to Asheville in Area Four American Legion baseball.

Asheville's Scott Russell slides into home Tuesday as Cherryville Post 100's David Wise gets a handle on the ball. Asheville went on to win 9-4.

LHS girls bball coach Barker resigns

June 5, 2002 - Lincolnton girls varsity basketball head coach Sheila Barker resigned.

Barker, who has been with the school for 15 years and 14 as head coach, said now is the time for a change.

Post 100 to play in tournament at UNC

June 7, 2002 - MORGANTON —Thursday’s Legion baseball game between Cherryville and Burke County was postponed by rain only minutes prior to the first pitch.

Cherryville outfielder Matt Lackey could play a big role for Post 100 at the UNC tournament.

Denver loses twice after week layoff

June 10, 2002 - DENVER — Denver Post 455’s schedule gave the players a week off.

Some of the players went to the beach for the week.

Making that adjustment from beach back to baseball was tough on Sunday as Monroe blasted Post 455 10-1.

Lincolnton' s Luis Arce went 2-for 3 for Denver Post 455 Sunday against Monroe.

SUMMERS' SOFTBALL SUMMER

June 12, 2002 - East Lincoln Optimist Wildcats' player Sarah Summers played a big role in her team's game against Kings Mountain in the girls aged 13 to 16 softball league.   Summers (left) stole second base as Kings mountain shortstop Angel Williams is late with the tag.   Summers (right) pitched as well.  The Wildcats won the game.

June 12, 2002 - FOREST CITY —Three days after coaching East Rutherford to the state 2A high school baseball title, Bobby Reynolds had to root against his players in an American Legion game.

 The situation was an Area IV contest Tuesday night between Cherryville and Rutherford County.

Denver pounds holes in Steele Creek

June 12, 2002 - DENVER — It was hit or be hit night for Denver Post 455 Tuesday night.

Denver cranked out 16 hits against Steele Creek pitching, but the same pitching hit Denver batters seven times in the game.

Denver Post 455 pitcher Justin Keever (above) pitched three strong innings in relief and fanned five batters. Keever (below) beat out a grounder for a hit in the sixth inning as Steele Creek first baseman Clay Smith leaped for the late throw. Keever finished with two hits on the night.

Cherryville doubles up on Caldwell, 6-3

June 14, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — Justin McLeymore got stronger as the game wore on, and Wes Lovelace provided the offensive punch.

 That combination was enough to carry Cherryville to a 6-3 victory over Area 4 arch-rival Caldwell County Thursday night before the biggest crowd of the season at Fraley Field.

Cherryville Legion's Jay Heafner dives back to first base in Tuesday's game against Caldwell County. Heafner was safe. Cherryville went on to win.

June 14, 2002 - Lincolnton Optimist girls softball champions, sponsored by Abernethy Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Lincolnton went undefeated in the regular season with a 12-0 record. Twist & Tuck wins at regionals

June 14, 2002 - Local gym Twist & Tuck took five athletes to compete against over 115 others in the Region V Power Tumbling and Trampoline events in Naples, Fla. recently. Twist & Tuck athletes brought back seven gold medals. Brittany Cash, a level-10 athlete placed first on the Double Mini and the Synchro Tramp. Cash, who has competed for eight years made the regional team. She will compete in the nationals in Indianapolis, Ind. Katie Trueman won the Trampoline and floor events. Emily Moore, Hannah Ross and Ashlee Frazier all finished first on the trampoline, Over 15 athletes will represent the Lincolnton team at the nationals in July. The team is coached by Rick and Renee Moody.

Little League Champs

June 14, 2002 - Thornburg machine won the regular season and the tournament titles in the Lincolnton Optimist 11-and-12 Little League division. The team finished with an 11-3 record. The team members are: (left to right, front row) Pat Sykes, Wesley Nale, Micah Hawn, Kyle Wilkinson, Rob Moore, John Helms, (sec-ond row) Drew Mullen, Matthew Blakeley, Chris Melton, Ben Robin-son and Mike Davis. 

Minor League Champs

June 14, 2002 - Kenlin Academy won the Lincolnton Optimist Minor League championship. This team won the regular season and the tournament title in the 9-10 age group. Kenlin went 13-1 for the season.  The team members are: (left to right, front row) Brandon Campbell, Chance Larson, Zack Smith, Devan Bivens, Nicholas Geerkin, Brett Milburn, Zack Surbeck (back row) Dustin (Dutter) Richardson, Luke Mitchem, Kendall Bethea, Alex Rios, Johnny Walker. LHS’ Bess signs to run for Lenoir-Rhyne

June 14, 2002 - Lincolnton cross country standout Perrell Bess will be running for Lenoir-Rhyne this fall.

Bess led the team to a second-place finish in the state championship last fall.

June 17, 2002 - DENVER — “If we hit the ball, we’re in the game. If we get clutch hits we’ll win the game.”

That’s what Denver Post 455 player Luis Arce said about his team Sunday after it defeated Newell 13-8.

Hickory overtakes Cherryville after pair of lopsided losses over weekend

June 17, 2002 - After beating defending state champion Shelby on Friday, Cherryville’s weekend road swing turned sour with lopsided losses to Hickory and Asheville.

Cherryville Post 100's Jay Heafner (4) slides in safely at home plate in Saturday's Area Four American Legion baseball game at Hickory. Although Cherryville got a run here, it was not nearly enough as Hickory cruised to a 19-6 victory.

Walls blasts grand slam, Summer hits three-run shot

June 19, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE—Cherryville resurrected its favorite weapon Tuesday night to beat McDowell in American Legion baseball.

The team known for the long ball got a three-run home run and a grand slam in the same inning on its way to a 12-7 victory before one of the biggest crowds of the season at Fraley Field.

Ruark gets AD job at East Lincoln

June 19, 2002 - DENVER — East Lincoln head football coach Jim Ruark has been named the school’s athletic director.

Ruark, who was selected for that position June 10, said he’s pleased he got the job.

W. Lincoln catcher signs with Limestone College

June 19, 2002 - The opportunity to compete for a starting job as a freshman was too good for David Wise to pass up.

Wise, a four-year starter at catcher for West Lincoln High School, confirmed Monday that he will sign a letter-of-intent to play baseball at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C.
