Post 100 to play in tournam, nt at UNC
By Mike Powell, LTN correspondent
June 7, 2002 - MORGANTON —Thursday’s Legion baseball game between Cherryville and Burke County was postponed by rain only minutes prior to the first
pitch.
Pre-game activities, including the playing of the Star Spangled Banner, had just been completed when a thunderstorm hit the Morganton area. The field was
flooded in a matter of minutes, ending any chance of a delayed start.
No makeup date for the game was announced last night.
Cherryville entered the game with a 4-2 record, including a 3-1 mark at home and 1-1 record on the road.
The rainout means Cherryville’s next action comes tonight in an eight-team Legion tournament on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill.
Post 100 is scheduled to play Sanford in the 8:30 p.m. game at the home park of the Tar Heels.
Other teams in the field are Chapel Hill, Goldsboro, Orange County, Snow Hill, Wilmington and Fuquay-Varina.
A win tonight will send Cherryville to the semifinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the winner of the opening round game between Chapel Hill and Goldsboro.
A loss will put Post 100 in the consolation bracket and force a game Saturday at 10 a.m. against the Chapel Hill-Goldsboro loser.
Other opening round matchups today are Wilmington vs. Fuquay-Varina at 4 p.m. and Orange County vs. Snow Hill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Semifinals are Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m., with the championship game set for Sunday at 7.
Cherryville Post 100 coach Bobby Dale Reynolds has a potential conflict this week.
His East Rutherford High School team is playing Saturday at Mudcat Stadium in Zebulon for the state 2A championship.
The Cavaliers meet Greene Central at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday in the first two games of the best-of-three finals. A decisive third game will be played Sunday afternoon if necessary.
Reynolds is expected to coach Cherryville tonight at Chapel Hill before traveling on to the Raleigh area in preparation for the 2A championship series.
If Post 100 loses tonight, assistant coach A.J. Henley will direct the team in Saturday’s consolation game.
Reynolds has the Cavaliers in the state finals for the second time. He is seeking his first state title as a head coach in high school baseball.
However, he has been part of state prep championships as a player (1982 with Cherryville) and as an assistant coach (also with Cherryville).
As Cherryville’s Legion coach, Reynolds guided Post 100 to back-to-back state championships in 1997 and 1998. The 1998 team played in the national
championship game in Las Vegas.
