Lady Rebels’ run ends with tough loss

Published May 16, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, LTN Staff Writer

FOREST CITY — West Lincoln unfortunately had to take off the pair Cinderella slippers on Wednesday as the Chase Lady Trojans defeated them 5-3.

Chase scored two runs in bottom of the first to take an early lead.

In the top of the second, senior Lauren Mosteller singled to lead off the inning. Emily Moore was inserted as a pinch runner for Mosteller. The next batter Charlye Godfrey doubled scoring Moore and making the score 2-1. The Lady Rebels were unable to produce any other runs for the inning.

In the bottom of the second, an unfortunate collision by two West Lincoln outfielders led to two more runs by Chase. They added one more run making the score 5-1.

The score remained at 5-1 in top of the fifth and the Lady Rebels knew they had to make a move.

With two outs Sheana Black singled. Katie Thornburg reached on an error that moved Black to third. That’s when Paula Jarette drove Black in with a center field shot.

In top of the sixth Wests’ Katie Davis started things off with a single. Godfrey reached on an error and made it to second on the throwing error. Davis was able to score off the miscue to make the score 5-3.

Sarah Peeler sacrificed bunted to move pinch runner Nicole Davis over to third, but the Lady Rebels were unable to get her in.

It was the last dance for seniors Lauren Mosteller and Jenny Bollinger.

“Lauren’s been solid for three years and at times spectacular. She’s a quiet leader and her teammates really respect her — one of the most coachable players I’ve ever coached,” Coach Allen Hoyle said.

“Jenny’s been done a pretty good job for us in the outfield after we moved her to right. She’s been a very good defensive player,” Hoyle said of his second senior.

Although, the Lady Rebels came out on the short end, they out hit Chase 11-9.

West Lincoln finished with a 6-9 mark in the conference.
