Lady Wolves season comes to an end against Trojans

Published May 14, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, LTN Staff Writer

CATAWBA — Lincolnton’s softball season came to an end Tuesday night as they fell to Bandys 6-1.

Lincolnton’s Santana Edwards pitched a solid game against the Trojans, striking out five batters.

The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, with things looking promising.

In the second inning, the Wolves had a chance to add to their lead. However, with a runner on third, they were unable to take advantage.

In the third inning, LHS was helped out by a double play that enabled them to get out of a jam.

Bandys, in the fourth, scored three runs off a couple of Lincolnton errors. That was all they needed as they added three more.

For Lincolnton, it came down to not executing when they had a chance. The Wolves squandered two opportunities with the bases loaded — having no runs to show for them.

Leading hitters for the Wolves were seniors Ashlea Farley and Andrea Stroup, both going 2-4 at the plate.

Coach Ann Anderson said that it’s going to be tough to fill her departing seniors’ shoes.

“Reylinda (Trevino) will be missed because she was such a motivator — always keeping the team up,” Anderson said. “She would do a lot of intangible things for us, such as bunting to move a runner over for us. She was easy to coach.”

Senior Andrea Stroup will be remembered for her ability to effectively switch positions, Anderson said.

“We asked her to move from third to catcher this year, out of necessity for the team,” she said. “We couldn’t have done so well if it wasn’t for her behind the plate. We also lose a good hitter.”

Senior Ashlea Farley was the heart and soul of the team, said the coach.

“What stood out to me, was how intense Ashlea became once she crossed those lines. She is such a competitor and she is going to do whatever she can to try and win the game.”

Farley led the team in hitting, batting at nearly a .450 clip.

Edwards pitching her first full year tallied 55 strikeouts, only surrendering 33 earned runs for the Wolves in close to 100 innings worked.

The Wolves finished the rebuilding year 7-8 in the conference. They have three juniors returning.
