East Lincoln notebook
By JOHN MARK BROOKS, LTN Staff Writer
A friendship is not the only thing East Lincoln coaches Scott Spohler and Jason Dragoon share. They also share a successful coaching career — leading their respective teams to solid
records on the year.
In soccer, the Lady Mustangs finished with the most wins in their program’s history, tallying 13 for the year.
The softball team, not to be outdone, went undefeated in the conference and is poised for a state title run.
The soccer girls were in a great position to make it to the state playoffs, but any hope for a soccer playoff berth fell by the wayside last Wednesday as the Lady Mustangs lost to South
Point 3-1.
South Point jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and looked to be well on its way to dominating the match.
East, however, had other plans. With ball control being their focus point — they were able to get a lot of shots on goal.
Although, they were able to deadlock the Lady Red Raiders in the second half 1-1 — East just couldn’t quite get over that hump.
Unfortunately for Coach Dragoons’ bunch, they were only able to muster one goal on multiple attempts for the game.
The Lady Mustangs still finished the year with a good record 13-5-3 and a 7-5 conference mark.
Dragoon has plenty to look forward to as he will return 16 players for the 2004 campaign.
“We have a legit shot of winning the conference next year. I truly believe that,” Dragoon said.
He is not only excited about the varsity team, but the JV, as well, as he inherits a middle school team that swept the county and finished with seven wins. He returns three sophomores
into the mix along with seniors Megan Hamilton, Krystle Kresge and Kathy Jones. Erin Smith and Jennifer Redman will be juniors next season.
With such a mix of young talent and veteran leadership from Hamilton, Kresge, Jones, Smith and Redman people in East Lincoln are excited about their lady soccer program.
Soccer is not the only girls program at East that has everybody excited. The Lady Mustangs softball team finished the regular season with a 16-2 record overall and a perfect 12-0 record
on the season.
Coach Spohler and his squad will play today in the second round of the conference tournament — they earned a first round bye winning the conference title.
“Its been a great year. The thing about our team is that there are no superstars,” said Spohler. “It’s been a total team effort with a lot of very good players.”
