Huge rally gives Lady Mustangs the win and the Big South Conference

In softball, East Lincoln came back in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6 over East Gaston. Down 6-2 in the seventh East staged a tremendous rally scoring five runs.

Carena Vinzant relieved Nicole Hall in the fifth. Hall finished with three strikeouts, but Vinzant picked up the win moving her record to a perfect 5-0 for the season.

Brooke Michael, Stephanie Horne and Nicole Shoemaker each had a hit and one RBI each for the Lady Mustangs. Stephanie Edwards went also chipped in with one hit of her own.

East Lincoln improves their record to 12-0 in a sure thing for the Lady Mustangs- a conference championship. Their conference championship starts next week and will be played at the East Lincoln Optimist Club.

East Lincoln comes up short against East Gaston

East Lincoln was stymied in Fridays game against East Gaston as they lost 6-2. East Gaston pitched Jason Cline, a Belmont Abbey signee, had 10 strikeouts and only gave up two runs. David Rue had a two RBI single in the sixth.

East Lincoln hosts Forestview tonight at 7 p.m. The only way the Mustangs can earn a berth in the state playoffs is to win the Big South Conference Tournament.

Lincolnton does well in Regionals; going to state

Friday May 9, 2003

John James and Devin High (the No.2 seed in the Regional) win two matches advancing them to the semifinals and qualifies the LHS duo to the 2A State Championships next week.

In their first round, they easily defeated a team from Brevard High School 6-0 6-1. Next, they faced a determined Shelby team beaten in the conference tourney last week. It was not an easy match, but John and Devin triumphed 6-2 6-4.

The only LHS singles qualifier Jimmy Thackston played well, but lost 2-6 4-6 to the midwest conference runner-up. Jimmy’s record is now 9-9 overall.

“I thought we did a good job, the draws we got were not pushovers,” Coach Chris Hoffman said.

The LHS duo played up to their seeded position by ousting the No. 3 seed, a young team from Avery County, in the semi-finals. It was another good match with the Wolfpack netters having to rally in the second set to take the win 6-2 7-5.

The finals was a rematch with a distinguished team from Shelby (Jay Chitty and Alex Pearson, both of whom hold state titles)

John and Devin gave a gallant effort but lost 0-6 2-6 to finish as the Regional Runner-ups (12-6 overall)

“I am very proud with our play in the regional tournament we represented the school well,” coach Hoffman said.

LHS travels to Brevard on Tuesday for the second round of dual teams. Then play in the 2A State Individual Championships in Cary, NC on Friday and Saturday.
