VALE — After a rocky season so far, the West Lincoln baseball team tried to get things back on the right track Wednesday night against Newton Conover.

After a quick start for the Devils, the Rebels tried to make a seventh inning comeback, but fell short in the 5-2 loss.

Leading the way for Newton in the win was left fielder Ryan McDuffie, who reached base on three out of four plate appearances. McDuffie also had a stolen base and two RBI’s.

For the Rebels, freshman designated hitter Chris Henderson had a good game, going 3-for-3, one walk and a seventh-inning RBI.

In the first inning, Newton center fielder Adam Hodge reached first, and after a stolen base, was brought in by McDuffie. With McDuffie on 2nd, West pitcher Brandon Jones was able to get out of the inning with back to back strikeouts.

Newton’s second baseman Lunce Bass started off the second inning with a double

Two batters later, pitcher Conor Sauve helped his own cause with a two-run single into right-center field.

West Lincoln finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by center fielder Matt Cook to make the score 3-1 in favor of Newton. The Devils added to more runs to the score in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-1.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and Paul Finger on first, Brent Gates, and Zac Koehler reached on an error and a walk. Chris Henderson got a line drive base hit down the middle to bring in Finger.

The next batter Bradley Goins ended the game on a strikeout.
