SHELBY — The Lincolnton girls softball team jumped out to 6-0 lead but held on to beat Shelby 6-4 in conference game on the road Thursday.
The Lady Wolves hit the ball well all day long but couldn’t get a break but in the second inning, they did their most damage.
With two outs in that inning, Reylinda Trevino and Kristin McJunkin both singled and then Meredith Gilleland reached on an error to load the bases.
Keisha Duncan walked in a run. Andrea Stroup’s infield base hit drove in another run.
But Jessica McJunkin and Lindsey Sain had the big blows. McJunkin’s slapped a single to knock in two runs and Sain followed with a big two-run triple.
The Lady Wolves were up 6-0 but failed to deliver the knock-out punch the rest of the way. They didn’t score another run.
The 6-0 lead remained until the bottom of the fifth when all of a sudden Shelby — who was West Lincoln’s Sheana Black had no-hit on Tuesday — woke up.
Shelby rapped out three hits and took advantage of several walks to score three runs. Then with one out another run came in on a walk.
Lincolnton pitcher Santana Edwards walked seven batters on the day.
But with bases loaded and the tying run on second, she got the batted to pop up. Edwards caught the ball and wheeled around and fired a throw to third and got
the runner who had ran off base
It was a huge double play.
The rest of the way, Edwards was in charge. She got the final six batters on strikeouts.
She threw 15 straight strike to finish the game.
With the win, LHS is now 6-5 in the conference behind East Rutherford, Chase and maybe Chase, according to LHS coach Ann Anderson.
It was a game that could have ended up as a disaster for the Lady Wolves who had the game in hand.
“We had them but we slacked off,” said Duncan. “We’ve got to get more pumped up when we have (tough times). We need more of a killer instinct.”
The win gets LHS back on track at bit said Jessica McJunkin.
“It’s a pretty good win,” she said. “We had a few not-so-great games. This win will boost our confidence. We’ve got to be more serious for each game.”
