LHS boys tennis takes second in conference

Lincolnton High School’s tennis team wrapped up its conference season with a second-place finish in the Mid-west 2-A tournament (Shelby won the tournament handily)

Only one of Lincolnton’s semi-finalist advanced to the finals — Jimmy Thackston, who was beaten by Shelby’s William Noblitt (the eventual tournament champ and defending State 2-A champ in singles).

Joseph and Andrew Allender were eliminated by Jay Chitty and Alex Pearson (Jay was the 2-A state champ in 2000- runner up 2002- Alex was half of the team that won the State 2-A doubles in 2002).

John James and Devin High won their semi-final doubles match 6-2, 6-1 and faced Chitty and Pearson (Shelby) in the finals. The Lincolnton duo gave the No. 1 seeds an exciting match but lost 3-6, 2-6. Their level of play should earn them a seeded position in the West Regional Tournament also at Gardner-Webb.

LHS will host a dual team play-off match next Tuesday then Regional on Friday and Saturday.

East softball blasts North Gaston

East Lincoln defeated North Gaston Tuesday afternoon in a game that lasted five innings and ended with a score of 13-1.

East scored a run in the second, 10 in the third and two runs in the fourth.

A highlight of the game came the bottom of the fourth when East’s Leslie Marlowe capitalized on an error by North Gaston’s center fielder and turned a deeply hit ball into an inside-the-park home run to score the team’s last two runs.

East’s leading batters were Carina Vinzant (2- for-3, three RBIs), Nicole Shoemaker (two hits and an RBI) and Nicole Hall (2-for-3).

East’s Carina Vinzant pitched a two-hitter while fanning six and walking none.

This win gives her a record of 4-0. East’s team record now stands at 13-2 overall and 9-0 in their conference.

East, the state’s ninth ranked team, will play at Hunter Huss today.
