LHS girls outdueled in tournament finals

From staff reports

May 17, 2002 - VALE — The Midwest 2A softball conference tournament was an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel at West Lincoln Optimist Park Thursday.

Lincolnton’s Lynsey Cooper and East Rutherford’s Lindsey Brooks went toe-to-toe.

However, East Rutherford scratched together one run in the third. Unfortunately for the Lady Wolves, that was all Brooks needed.

Brooks fanned 11 batters and gave up only four hits to shut out Lincolnton to give the Lady Cavaliers, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, the title.

The Lady Cavaliers got singles from Cagney Davis and  Samantha Rich in the third. Davis came home on Brooks’ ground out.

Lincolnton had its chances.

In the second, senior catcher Lauren Bartholomew led off with a double. After a ground out, Cooper singled up the middle but Bartholomew held up at third and Brooks retired the next two batters.

In the third, Andrea Stroup doubled with one out but Brooks was stingy again. She fanned the next two batters.

‘We had people on in the second, third and fourth innings,” said LHS coach Ann Anderson, “but we didn’t take advantage. We struck out too much, especially with runners on. The game as expected was very close.

“I thought we were a little flat today because of the emotions we put into the Chase game (Wednesday). We needed that game to solidify our second place finish to for the playoffs.”

Against Chase, Anderson said Cooper pitched one of her best games ever as Lincolnton shut out the Lady Trojans 4-0 on Cooper’s four-hitter.

“She pitched a super game,” Anderson said of her ace. “She was excellent. It was the best she has pitched all season.”

In that game, Stroup, Bartholomew, Cooper, Keisha Duncan, Reylinda Trevino and Lindsey Sain all had hits to contribute to a big win.

With the second-place finish, the Lady Wolves will host Eastern Guilford in the first round of the state playoffs next week. The date hasn’t been set.
