Bentley wins by knockout
From staff reports
May 17, 2002 - NASHVILLE — Lincolnton’s Stacey Bentley’s return to the ring is successful.
The Carolina Golden Boy won his first fight Saturday night after a seven-year lay off from the game.
Bentley knocked out Doug Davis, a veteran of 18 fights, early in the second round to up his record to 10-1-1.
Bentley said he was real nervous.
But he came out banging. He said he tried to get respect early. It paid off. He knocked Davis down with a right left hook.
Davis got up after the third count.
Later in the first both fighters butted heads. That gave Bentley a cut above his eye.
Bentley knew then he had to go for the knockout.
“I had to pick up the pace,” he said. “I felt they were going to stop the fight. So I kept punching and wouldn’t let up.”
In the second round, Bentley went with a combination capped by a right left hook that flattened Davis.
Bentley‘s trainer, Lincolnton native Butch Chambers, said he was sharp.
Bentley was originally scheduled to fight Brooks Mullis but Mullis didn’t make the weight limit for the welterweight bout.
He said he has to wait until mid-June for his cut to heal.
