Lady Wolves have West’s number again
From staff reports
May 15, 2002 - Lincolnton’s softball team pulled out a close 2-0 win over rival West Lincoln at Betty G. Ross Park Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Wolves advance to the second round of the Midwest 2-A Conference Tournament.
They will play at 6 p.m. against the Chase-Newton Conover winner
Both pitchers Kelsey Barrett of West and Lynsey Cooper threw very well. West Lincoln actually out hit Lincolnton six to three, but Lady Wolves pushed across single runs in the second and
third innings.
The Lady Wolves’ run in the second was scored without a hit.
Lauren Bartholomew walked and later came home on a ground out by Cooper.
LHS swung its bats in the third. Santana Edwards doubled to start the inning. Andrea Stroup reached on a bunt single. Edwards scored on a ground out by Keisha Duncan.
LHS’ other hit came from Lindsey Sain in the sixth.
Cooper struck out eight while shutting out the Lady Rebels. She didn’t walk anyone.
“I felt good out there today, and I made the pitches I needed to make to keep us in the lead,” Cooper said.
“I thought we played solid defense, but we didn’t hit the ball like we needed to. We definitely need to get our bats going.”
West’s Barrett was almost as good. She fanned five and surrendered just one walk.
Even though designated hitter Lacy Parker had three of her team’s hits, the Lady Rebels stranded seven base runners to really hurt their chances for the upset win.
“We hit Cooper the best we’ve hit her in the last couple years,” said West coach Allen Hoyle. “We just couldn’t push across a run. We’re young, we played good defense, and Kelsey pitched very well. We just didn’t put our hits together.”
The loss ended West’s season, but Hoyle said the future is bright.
“We have some good players coming from the middle school and we’ve got some good experience for our freshman and sophomores,” he said. “I think we’re a
lot better now than at the start of the season. We were not a very good team early in the year, but right now I think we can play with anyone in our conference.”
One West starter, shortstop Kaylon Carpenter, however, played her last game as a West Lincoln player.
“We played very hard today, our defense was good, our hitting was better today, but not well enough to win,” she said. “Seems like our hitting wasn’t as good
as our defense all season, but we played together well.
“I loved my four years here and I’ll miss it very much.”
Lincolnton coach Ann Anderson, said the team will have to get the bats going to win the second round.
“We’ll have to get more hits to beat either team Wednesday,” she said. “Today, we struck out too much, and were not aggressive at all. We were fortunate to get
a couple of runners on and were able to push across a couple of runs, but I would like to see us swing the bats better.”
