LHS Bailey and East’s Seehorn bring home state championships in track

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Sports Writer

May 13, 2002 - Friday and Saturday were very special days for Lincolnton’s Junior Bailey and East Lincoln’s Meghan Seehorn.

Bailey, who won the 2A state championship in the 110-meter high hurdles last year, did it again on Friday.

Seehorn, who had won the high jump in the Big South 3A track championships and at the 3A west regionals, won by a scratch to take the state championship on Saturday.

FRIDAY 2A ROUNDUP: Bailey, who had one of the fastest times in the 110 hurdles all season, missed the conference meet and came in second in the at West Regionals behind North Henderson’s Cade Liverman.

Liverman likes to talk to his competitors before the race.

But Friday at the state meet, Bailey told Lincolnton coach Jeff Cloninger, if Liverman tries to talk to him before the race, he wasn’t going to ignore him.

That may have kept Bailey focused.

He got a excellent start, cleared hurdles well and by the middle of the race, it was clear he had it He ran it in 14.33 seconds.

“He had a real good start,” said Cloninger. There was no doubt we started pumping our fists up before the race was over.”

Liverman was close but fell at the end to take seventh.

Bailey did it again.

“I’m happy,” he said. “In a way, I expected to win. But I had a strained hamstring. But my workout was good. (It) felt good to get it this year. Last year I won it for my mother. This time I won it for me. Praise God.”

Bailey did extremely in the long jump also. He came in third with a jump of 22 feet, 8 inches.

“It was really shocking,” Cloninger said. He just dabbled wit the long jump. He really went for it. His jump could have won the 3A meet.

Other Wolves did well, too and helped Lincolnton come in seventh.

Jared Webb led the field in the 3,200 before finishing fourth. But Webb is a sophomore and will be back.

Webb also helped the 4x800 relay team get a third-place finish. Perrell Bess was the closer.

That may have hurt Bess in the 1,600. He came in 11th.

West Lincoln had several chances to do well. Kirk Heavner, the only boys qualifier was sixth in one of the heats in the 400. He didn’t make the finals but would have placed eighth with his time.

Lilly Tallent competed in two events — the discus throw and the shot put.

She had one of her best shots but placed 11th. In the discus, she didn’t have her best throw and came in ninth. But like Webb, she’s only a sophomore.

SATURDAY 3A ROUNDUP: Seehorn and Afir Carter of Durham Hillside both had jumped 5 feet-2 inches and were trying clear a higher mark. But both jumpers couldn’t get it. So because Carter had scratched once on her 5-2 tries, Seehorn won the state title.

“It’s great,” she said. “It’s hard to believe it happened. It’s pretty cool. I jumped the same height every time (in the conference, regionals and state meets). I didn’t think I could win. I thought I would place.”

East Lincoln other two girls Sabrina Abraham and Toree Roseboro placed seventh in preliminary heats in their events.

East Lincoln boys lone representative, Jonathon Tucker, came in fifth in the 400.
