Briefs - March 7, 2002

DAVID KEEVER, LTN Correspondent

March 7, 2003 - LINCOLNTON — The South Point pitching staff led by starter Joe Springs held Lincolnton hitters to only five hits in an 8-2 loss on Wednesday.

The Red Raiders scored four times in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead, and that would be plenty for Springs and the South Point bullpen.

The Wolves’ lone hitter with more than one hit was Ryan Pendleton, who went 2-for-3. The Red Raiders had ten hits on the day, and were led by Springs and Chase Ensley with two hits each.

Springs got the win for South point, while Jason Hammonds took the loss for Lincolnton. The Wolves fall to 1-2 on the season, and will play at East Lincoln today at 4:30.

Lincolnton Coach Chris Hoffman was pleased.

“We earned a tough win,” he said. “Our three seniors really played well accounting for all our points.

“They won Nos. 1, 2, and 3 singles. Jimmy Thackston pulled out a close split set win in No. 1 singles. Joseph and Andrew Allender took No. 2 and No. 3 singles in straight sets. Jimmy and Joseph delivered the victory in a great match at No. 1 doubles after Andrew and junior Michael Phillips had dominated No. 2 doubles,” he said.
