Search for head coach is on, Lady Mustangs outshoot Burns, 4-1

East Lincoln Notebook

TERRANCE THOMAS, Staff Writer

March 5, 2003 - DENVER — East Lincoln High School is still looking for a new head football coach to replace Jim Ruark.

Ruark recently accepted the head position at Charlotte’s Myers Park High School.

East principal Todd Black said he hopes the school can get a new coach by the end of March.

The school recently put the job listing on the North Carolina High School Athletic Association web site.

Black said the school is searching for a coach like Ruark.

“We’re looking for a charismatic and highly motivated coach to come in where Ruark left off with the same type of work ethic and goals,” Black said.

Black said that coach must be able work in and with the community.

Ruark’s two-year stint was somewhat successful. He led the team to the playoffs both season.

Black said that administrator Tony Willis is now interim athletic director. The school wants to get someone in house to fill the position but Black said, “It’s not a pressing issue.”

Black said one of the biggest problems upcoming for the athletic staff will come next fall when about 30 percent of East’s students will leave to attend North Lincoln High School, which is scheduled to open in the August.

“We’ll be in a rebuilding process,” Black said. “We’ll have to go back to ground zero.”

Whoever takes over as head football coach will feel the effect of losing those players right away.

EAST NOTEBOOK:

The Lady Mustangs soccer team won at Burns 4-1 Monday. They outshot Burns 18-6.

Erin Smith had 2 goals, while Krystal Hendricks and Julia Barker each added a goal in the victory. Kim Scercy went the distance in net with 5 saves.

East will play Burns again today at home.

In the team’s season opener last week, East shut out North Iredell 6-0.

Erin Smith scored three goals and had one assist and when she switched to goal keeper, she had combined with Kim Scercy to make 10 saves to keep North Iredell from scoring.

Kathy Jones and freshman Moriah Bell each had a goal while Krystle Kresge had both a goal and an assist.
