Foard scores early to beat the Rebels

DARRIN KISER, LTN Correspondent

March 5, 2003 - VALE — After losing eight senior starters from last years team, the West Lincoln Rebels varsity baseball team got off to a shaky start in the 2003 season against the Fred T. Foard Tigers Monday

West gave up three runs in the first inning, and couldn’t recover, losing the game 6-2.

After striking out the first batter looking, West pitcher Zach Koehler had a hard time ending the inning. He walked one batter, hit another, and gave up two base hits.

“We had trouble getting out of the first because of inexperience,” said Head Coach Allan Chapman. “They were all a little nervous.”

The Rebels also had trouble on offense, not getting a hit until the fifth inning. However, they did manage to get six hits in the last three innings.

In the top of the third, Kochler walked Foard’s Adam Windham, who stole second and was eventually driven in by right fielder Chris Koening’s double.

Matt Cook replaced Kochler in the top of the fourth. He gave up four runs in four innings, with three strikeouts and three walks.

After a scoreless fourth, Foard scored again in the fifth when pitcher Homero Avalos knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.

West finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a string of hits. Freshman Paul Finger got the first hit of the game for the Rebels. Freshman first baseman Jonathon Thomas doubled but Finger was thrown out at third on the hit. Thomas later scored on Cook’s base hit.

In the sixth inning, Toby Lawrence came in to finish off the game for the Rebels. Cook left after pitching two innings, giving up a run off three hits.

Both teams scored one run in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh with two players on for the Rebels with one out and down by 4, Cook grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Avalos pitched a complete game for the Tigers, giving up two runs off six hits to the Rebels.
