West Middle wrestler to represent school, state

March 29, 2002 - VALE — While his classmates will be at the beach or the mountains this weekend relaxing, West Lincoln Middle School student Jamey Goodman will be taking on perhaps the challenge of his life.

Goodman, who wrestled as a heavyweight for the school’s team, will compete in the Future Champions National Challenge Cup.

West Lincoln Middle School wrestler will compete against wrestlers from six other states at the Future Champions national Challenge Cup today and Saturday in Tennessee.

West Lincoln baseball has an off night but hangs on to win

March 29, 2002 - VALE —The West Lincoln baseball squad didn’t look like a No. 5 team in the state against Bunker Hill Wednesday.

But the Rebels did what top teams do: Win.

West Lincoln survived an off night but beat the Bears 5-3 to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Food Country won the West Lincoln Optimist Fourth, Fifth, Sixth Grade division tournament championship. East Lincoln baseball beats Hunter Huss

David Rue tossed a five-hitter and had a two-run single in the seventh to lead East Lincoln to a 6-4 win at Hunter Huss Wednesday.

In a game that was a pitchers’ duel for six innings, East scored five runs in the seventh and held off Huss.

LHS boys and East girls win at County Meet

Girl Power: East Lincoln's 4 x 200 relay team (left to right, Toree Roseboro, Tiffany Finandis, Shelley Thompson and Allison Castle) cruised in its event and helped the Lady Mustangs win the meet.

Lincolnton's 4 X 100 relay team (Left to right, William Lineberger, Derrick Nixon, Sam Lawrence and Junior Bailey) was victorious in the County Meet Monday.

March 27, 2000 - Lincolnton boys and east Lincoln girls were crowned the kings and queens of Lincoln County track and field Monday.

The Wolves won the boys county meet with 98 points, East had 41 and West, 34.

Second Annual Peoples Bank Easter Baseball Tourney at Lincolnton HS

March 27, 2002 - Lincolnton High school will host the second annual Peoples Bank Easter Tournament, Monday (April 1) and Tuesday (April 2).

West Lincoln will take on Maiden in the first game at 5 p.m. and Lincolnton plays Bandys at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Lady Wolves softball shuts down Lady Rebels

March 25, 2002 - VALE — Lincolnton was able to beat both county rival West Lincoln and the cold afternoon Friday.

Third baseman Andrea Stroup banged out four hits and senior pitcher Lynsey Cooper tossed a two-hitter as the Lady Wolves blanked the Lady Rebels 10-0.

It started as a pitcher’s duel between Coopers and Lady Rebels starter Kelsey Barrett.

West Lincoln shortstop Kaylon Carpenter's tag is too late to get Lincolnton's Lindsay Sain in Friday's softball action.

HISTORIC: ELAX wins first lacrosse match in county

March 25, 2002 - DENVER — History was made on Lincoln County soil Saturday.

What is believed to be Lincoln’s first ever lacrosse match was played on East Middle School fields.

A team primarily made up of East Lincoln students called ELAX (East Lacrosse) played Charlotte area Butler High School.

East Lacrosse attacker Jay Thompson (in white with ball in net) makes a move against Butler Saturday. Thompson had two goals  in the ELAX 4-3 triple overtime game.

East Lincoln baseball teams falls; West wins

March 25, 2002 - North Gaston scored four runs in the seventh inning to beat East Lincoln 8-5 Friday.

Danny O’Brien, JoJo Dellinger both went 2-for-4 while Josh Cardoso smacked a two-run homer.

East will host Cherryville today at 5 p.m. and travel to Hunter Huss Tuesday at 7 p.m.

West Lincoln defeated Shelby Friday. West is now 8-0.

Armed and dangerous Rebels off to hot start

March 22, 2002 - VALE — Don’t mess with the West Lincoln baseball team about now.

The Rebels are 7-0, ranked in the state, and taking names.

They’re hot and finding ways to win close games and yet have to power to blow you out.

West Lincoln's Mitch Warlick (at bat) is one of the Rebels who are doing little things to help the team win.

March 22, 2002 - Lail Electric finished in first place in the Fifth-Sixth Grade Lincolnton Optimist basketball league with a 9-0 record. The team also won their tournament to complete their perfect season. March 22, 2002 - The East Lincoln Optimist Lakers won the regular season championship in the Fifth-Sixth Grade Division with a 5-2-1 record. Foard edges LHS tennis

The Lincolnton boys tennis team lost a tough 5-4 home match to Fred T. Foard Thursday.

LHS won four singles matches but lost three doubles. In the doubles, Foard won two of the them, 9-7 and 8-6.

March 20, 2002 - West Lincoln tennis player Michael Anthony serves in the Rebels 6-3 win over East Lincoln Thursday.

New Life Baptist girls finish third at Nationals

March 20, 2002 - Lincolnton’s New Life Baptist Academy girls basketball team recently finished third in the National Association of Christian Athletes National Division III tournament.

The team competed in the NACA event March 13 through 15 in Dayton, Tenn.

NLBA won their first game of the tournament before falling to the eventual champion in the second round. They did win their final round to place third.

No Net Gain

March 20, 2002 - Lincolnton's Jimmy Thackston warms up before Tuesday's match with Statesville. Thackston and Devin High got the only singles wins for LHS which lost 5-2. Two singles matches were tie breakers. The match ended quick because half the lights went out during doubles. 

LHS softball tops Newton

March 20, 2002 - The Lincolnton softball team won their conference opener by beating Newton-Conover 5-2 Tuesday.

Lynsey Cooper hurled a four-hitter, struck out six while walking four to get the win.

Lauren Bartholomew went 2-for-3 while driving in three runs.

Reylinda Trevino, Keisha Duncan, Lindsey Cooper, Lindsey Sain all had hits.

The Lady Wolves play at West Lincoln Friday at 4 p.m.

Bandys rocks Wolves, 11-0

March 20, 2002 - CATAWBA — The Lincolnton baseball team ran into a Bandys buzz saw Tuesday.

The Trojans’ pitching ace Chris Harvey struck out eight while tossing a four-hit shutout. Harvey joined in on the Bandys bat party too. He had three hits to lead Bandys to a 11-0 win.

Mustangs get first baseball win by edging LHS

March 18, 2002 - DENVER — The East Lincoln Mustangs did al the thing they haven’t been doing to capture their first win of the season.

The hard luck Mustangs got the breaks they needed and beat county-rival Lincoln 4-3 Friday.

East Lincoln David Rue (pictured) and twin brother Michael Rue pitched well to beat Lincolnton 4-3 Friday.

March 18, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — It’s a rare night when a storied baseball program like Cherryville takes a drubbing at home.

To make matters worse, this old-fashioned whipping came at the hands of arch-rival West Lincoln.

East track teams place

East Lincoln girls defeated East Gaston and Ashbrook last week.

Sabrina Abraham won both the 100-meter hurdles and the 300M hurdles. Crissy Tinsley captured both the triple and long jumps. Tiffany Finandis and Toree Roseboro won the 100M dash and the 200M run respectively, then combined to lead the 400M relay to victory. The 1,600M relay team also won.

March 15, 2002 - NEWTON — West Lincoln baseball team puts in a 9 to 5 effort and beats Fred T. Foard twice Thursday night.

The Rebels won the completion of a suspended game 9-5 when Jay Heafner slapped grand slam homer over the center field fence.

Lady Mustangs look extra sharp in win over Burns

March 15, 2002 - DENVER — Excellent pitching and defense will put you in position to win every time.

East Lincoln pitchers Autumn Painter and Aleah Lane combined to throw a two-hitter and strike out 11 as the Lady Mustangs shut out Burns 4-0 Thursday in softball action.

East's Kristen Taffi ran past second on her way to third for a triple.

East Lincoln pitcher Autumn Painter struck out the first five batters against Burns. She got the win as East beat the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 Thursday.

Sportsman of the Year

March 13, 2002 - West Lincoln head wrestling coach Butch Ross was named the George Sain Lincoln County Sportsman of the year by the Lincoln Sportsman Club. Ross, who led his team to its eighth straight conference championship, was selected for his dedication of sportsmanship and many hours devoted to the youth of the community. Ross was honored on Saturday on the 50th anniversary of the club.

New team, new sport: Debut games satisfies goal

March 13, 2002 - HUNTERSVILLE — Guess what sport this is.

A player picks up a fumble, runs with the ball and avoids getting hit by the defense. Then he passes the ball to a teammate who catches the ball and then sets up a play around the net.

He then passes the ball to a teammate who tries to get the ball past the goalie into the net.

A question mark on his shirt - the East Lincoln team has not yet selected a name - Paul Lisun tries to get the ball away from a N. Mecklenburg player at last week's match.

March 11, 2002 - VALE — With a strong pitching from Chris Halubka West Lincoln blanked Cherryville 3-0 Friday.

Halubka struck out 10 Ironmen while throwing the 4-hit shutout. He walked just two.

Mustangs boys tennis tops Cherryville

March 11, 2002 - East Lincoln boys tennis team defeated Cherryville Friday 7-2.

Preston Mitchell, Ryan Pigg, Ben Greenberg, Christopher Wentworth, and Michael Phillips all won singles matches.

The teams of Mitchell-Pigg and Greenberg-Wentworth won in doubles.

Lady Ironmen get big hits to defeat LHS softball

March 11, 2002 - Cherryville’s Keri Hastings drove in two runs including the game winner to lead the Lady Ironmen to a 6-3 win over Lincolnton softball team at Betty G. Ross Park Friday.

With the score tied at 3, Cherryville’s Tara Rhyne on second with two outs, Hastings smacked a triple to right drive in Rhyne.

Wolves take advantage of Mustangs’ mistakes to win

March 8, 2002 - The Lincolnton baseball team used some solid pitching and an advantageous offense to beat East Lincoln Thursday 7-1 in Lincolnton.

The solid pitching came from Wolves’ ace, Luis Arce who scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out six.

Rebels get run in seventh to beat the Mustangs

March 6, 2002 - DENVER — Justin Pearson slapped a single to left field in the top of the seventh to drive in the winning run to give West Lincoln a 2-1 win over rival East Lincoln the second time in five days.

But the story of the game had to be the pitching of West pitcher Jay Heafner..

LHS varsity baseball falls

North Gaston scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Lincolnton 10-9 Tuesday.

Lincolnton had 13 hits but committed six errors. Luis Arce, Justin Keever and Brandon Hurt each had two hits in the lost.

Timken Bass Club results

March 6, 2002 - The Timken Bass Club of Lincolnton fished the first tournament of the year Saturday Feb. 16 on Mountain Island Lake.

The winner and second place were taken by anglers fishing alone.

The top five were 1) Ed Bowman, 2) Roger Wood, 3) Travis Eaves and John Artis, 4) Ken Stamey and Scottie Stewart 5) Shane and Jerry Lineberger.

The Big Fish was caught by Eaves and Artis.

Wolves heats up in 10th to freeze South Point

March 4, 2002 - Where were the electric blankets, long johns and portable heaters?

It was cold Friday afternoon at Lincolnton’s Jonathan Brookins baseball field.

It got even colder when visiting South Point rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to send the game in extra innings.

March 4, 2002 - VALE — Josh Carpenter knocked in four runs while Christopher Halubka struck out nine batters to lead West Lincoln to a 7-3 win over cross-county rival East Lincoln Friday.

Carpenter hit a double to drive in Justin Pearson and Jay Heafner in the third inning.

March 1, 2002 - VALE — With 11 returning seniors and depth at every position, West Lincoln looks strong enough to make a run for the conference title.

West will again be led by the Do-Everything Jay Heafner, who could make all-state and will probably be named conference player of the year.

West Lincoln first baseman Mitch Warlick can swing the bat.

Justin Pearson and several other pitchers must "step up" for the Rebels to have a banner season.

When arms mature, look out for LHS

March 1, 2002 - Something interesting happened Thursday in Lincolnton’s 12-0 win over Maiden.

The scoreboard malfunctioned and couldn’t get past 10 when trying to show all of the Wolves’ runs.

Luis Arce is Lincolnton's top starter. He pitched a one-hit shutout against Maiden Thursday.
