LHS boys and East girls win at County Meet
TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Sports Writer
March 27, 2000 - Lincolnton boys and east Lincoln girls were crowned the kings and queens of Lincoln County track and field Monday.
The Wolves won the boys county meet with 98 points, East had 41 and West, 34.
The Lady Mustangs ran faster and jumped higher and farther to capture the girls county meet with 89 points, West tallied 59 points with LHS getting 28.
In the boys meet, Lincolnton dominated with 10 wins, came in second in five other events and won the 4x100, 4x800 and 4x 400-meter relay races.
Junior Bailey led the way, winning three individual events (the long jump, 110 high hurdles and the 100. He led the 4x100 team to victory.
“We’re just practicing,” he said. “Our goals are to make state. We’re out here to do good.”
Bailey said he improved time in the 100, 110 hurdles and distance in the long jump.
Bailey is ranked in the top five in the state in 110 hurdles. Last year he won the 2A state championship in that event.
Other 4x100 team members won other events for LHS.
Derrick Nixon won both the triple and high jumps. William Lineberger was first in the 200 and came in second in the high jump.
In the distance races, Perrell Bess crossed the finish line first in the 800 and the 1,600 runs.
Lincolnton owned the discus event. Clarence Curry, Antoine Faw and Dustin Wilson finished 1-2-3 in that event.
East Lincoln which had just came off of winning the Ben Best Relays Saturday at North Gaston had to be sharp on two days rest.
East only got wins in to events. Jonathan Tucker was victorious in the 400.
“I did pretty good,” he said. “The team showed up like we wanted too. We did pretty good.”
Tucker helped East win the 4x200 relay. Morris Rendleman came in second in both the 100 and 200.
West Lincoln won two events. The Rebels took top two spots in the pole vault and three of the top four places in the shot put that Cory Carpenter won.
Carpenter was happy with his win.
“It was a lucky day,” he said. “I threw it as hard as I could and I got first place. I really didn’t improve. I’m just happy I won.”
In the girls meet, East Lincoln girls dominated the speed and jump events to cruise to an easy win.
East won 4x100 and the 4x200 relay races and finished 1-2 in the high, long and triple jumps and the 100, 200 and 300 intermediate hurdles.
Altogether, the Lady Mustangs won eight individual events and were second in eight others.
The highlight of the meet were East’s freshmen sensations, Allison Castle and Toree Roseboro. Castle won the 400 and the 300 intermediate hurdles while
Roseboro was first in the 100 and 200.
They teamed together with seniors Shelley Thompson and Tiffany Finandis and won the 4x200 relay.
“I was tired after the 400 and I came back to win the 300 hurdles,” said Castle. “I’m surprised how well I’ve done. I’m happy. It motivates me to better my
time.”
Roseboro expected to do well.
“I expected to come out here and blow away the field,” she said. “I’m not really surprised I won. I could have done better. I did well in the 100.”
While Castle and Roseboro were doing their things, other Lady Mustangs did well, too. Megan Seahorn won the high jump and came in second in the triple jump and the 300 hurdles behind Castle.
Christie Tinsley out jumped the field in the long and triple.
West Lincoln had a good showing. The Lady Rebels won the 1,600 relay and won three other events while placing second in five others.
Lily Tallent had the best performance of all. She won the discus and shot put. Brittany Watts got the other win in the pole vault.
Brittany Beeker had two second place finishes in the long distance events (1,600 and 3,200).
Rici Goodhue came in second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.
“(My day) was OK,” she said. “It was not as good as I wanted it too. I have tendonitus in my knee. It affected me in the 300 hurdles. I could have came in second.”
Lincolnton girls didn’t have a standout day. But their standout athlete Stephanie Atkins had a marvelous outing.
Atkins, who ran well in the state cross country meet, led the 4x800 team to victory and won the 800, 1,600 and the 3,200. No other girl in the meet won three
individual events.
