New Life Baptist girls finish third at Nationals

March 20, 2002 - Lincolnton’s New Life Baptist Academy girls basketball team recently finished third in the National Association of Christian Athletes National Division III tournament.

The team competed in the NACA event March 13 through 15 in Dayton, Tenn.

First, the Lady beat North Georgia Christian of Fort Oglethorpe 56-28.

Carrie Parker led NLBA offensively with 21 points while Lindsey Goodson led the defense with , stealing and scoring off of the turnovers.

In the second round, Central Heights of Mt. Airy Ga. defeated the Lady Warriors.

Rachel Brown led NLBA with 12 points.

In the final round of competition, NLBA played one of its better games against Gateway Christian of St. Louis, Mo.

Gateway led by nine at the half before NLBA roared back. In the fourth quarter.

It took a team effort to rally back.

Hannah Reynolds and Megan Caldwell came off the bench to spark the team.

Parker poured it on, scoring 12 of her 23 points in the fourth while Lauren Rorie covered the inside (she had 16 for the game).

Once the Lady Warriors got the lead, Cindy Pate sealed it up with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“They had girls that ran like fast trucks,” said Rorie. “We really had to come back. When we look back at the tournament, we’ll look back at that game and how we (won it).”

“We played extremely well in that third-place game,” said NLBA coach Stephen Parker. “It was the best we’ve played all year.

“Playing at the NACA National Tournament adds energy to our program and character,” he added. “Others will see we’re small but we’re gaining interest and other students my join us. Both team we beat there were state champions. It was a big day for New Life athletics.”

The players agree it was a great experience.

“It was really good for us,” said Reynolds. “It was incredible competition there. It was an awesome experience. We feel proud that we could hang with them.”

“I’ll (leave here) with good memories,” said Senior Cindy Pate. “We did pretty good. It was that last game that was special to me.”

The Lady Warriors hope their tournament play will be something that will start something big at the school.

“I hope we can leave a tradition,” said senior Lindsey Goodson. “To go to the nationals and really have to play as a team, we’re proud of ourselves. We hope future teams can follow in our footsteps.”

“It was tough competition,” said Carrie Parker. “We had to work harder and show some heart. I was surprised how well we did.”

Goodson and Parker made the NACA All-Tournament team.

NLBA is a NACA Division V school that finished second in the state. The team moved up to Division III level to play in the tournament.

The Lady Warriors’ team members are seniors, Pate, Goodson and Brown. sophomores Parker, Rorie, Jenni Moore and Rebecca Dellinger and freshmen Reynolds, Caldwell and Haley Greene.
