Rebels get run in seventh to beat the Mustangs

March 6, 2002 - DENVER — Justin Pearson slapped a single to left field in the top of the seventh to drive in the winning run to give West Lincoln a 2-1
win over rival East Lincoln the second time in five days.
But the story of the game had to be the pitching of West pitcher Jay Heafner.
The Rebel hurler settled down after giving four hits in the inning and a third and threw no-hit ball the rest of the way to get the complete-game win.
“I had a rough start,” said Heafner who struck out eight. “I finally got into a groove luckily. The defense behind me took care of me.”
In the stretch of no-hit ball, Heafner allowed just two base runners. He hit one batter and another reached on as an error.
“We could have gotten more hits if we would have taken the bats off our shoulder,” said East catcher Danny O’Brien. “Heafner had consistent velocity and
movement. We took some good cuts. We couldn’t get solid contact.”
O’Brien was one of the few that hit Heafner.
In the bottom of the first, East got a leadoff single from Michael Rue. Then center fielder Thomas Abernathy smacked a pitch to left for a double.
O’Brien singled to left to drive in Rue.
Rue was the only batter to get past second base for East.
East’s 1-0 lead lasted until the top of the fifth.
At that point, West batters had trouble with David Rue. Rue had given up two hits at that point.
The Rebels’ Dustin Gee hit a grounder to East’s Matt McIntosh at third. McIntosh’s throw was short and bounced by first baseman Pat Benfield. Gee ran to
second. With one out, Heafner’s infield single brought Gee in.
It stayed tied until the seventh.
West’s Chris Halubka singled to left to lead off the top half of the inning. Cory Branton came in to run for Halubka.
Pinch-hitter Brent Gates sacrificed Branton to second.
With two outs, Pearson slapped a base hit to left. Branton rounded third and came home.
In the bottom of the seventh. Heafner got O’Brien to ground out, struck out Josh Hamby and got Josh Cardoso to fly out to center.
It was indeed a tough day at the plate for the Mustangs. They left only two on base.
For the Rebels, Heafner and Pearson each had two hits.
East will travel to Lincolnton Thursday while the Rebels whill host Fred T. Foard Thursday and Cherryville Friday.
