February 3, 2003 - What a weekend for Lincolnton basketball teams!

The boys and girls came out with two big conference wins (Friday against West Lincoln and Saturday versus Newton-Conover).

West wrestlers lose in playoffs

February 5, 2003 - VALE — West Lincoln wrestling team defeated West Montgomery 62-9 in the first round of the state dual matches at West Lincoln Middle School School. Tuesday.

The Rebels, however, were edged by Mt. Pleasant 37-33 in the second round which was played right after the first round.

West boys beat Bandys in OT, girls fall

February 5, 2003 - VALE — The West Lincoln boys basketball team allowed Bandys to score 20 straight points in the Tuesday night.

But the Rebels hung on.

Center Ty Curtis playing with four fouls, grabbed a rebound after a missed shot and put it back in with 22 seconds left in overtime to beat Bandys, 74-73.

February 7, 2003 - Scoring 1,000 points in a high school basketball career is quite an achievement.

It requires the player to be a major scoring leader right away in his or her sophomore year or get a lot of playing time and points as a freshman.

LMS girls get two wins

February 10, 2003 - The Lincolnton Middle School Lady Wildcats basketball team defeated Kings Mountain Thursday 32-29 for their second straight victory.

The leading scorers were Brittany Jones (14) Jessie Cline (6) Shara Quiron (4) Ingrid Bonilla (3) Ashley Broadway (3) and Caitlin Clark (2).

 The Lady Wildcats beat Burns 26-23 on Wednesday.

The top scorers were Brittany Jones (12) Jessie Cline (4) Ashley Broadway (4) Shara Quiron (4) and Keelie Steward (2).

Next game is Monday at home against Burns.

Mustangs beats Wolves; LHS girls win

February 10, 2003 - It has been a long season of tough and close losses for the East Lincoln boys basketball team.

But Saturday, things picked up for the Mustangs.

After trailing 31-19 to Lincolnton, East dominated the third quarter 22-2 to go on to shock Lincolnton 54-47.

East Lincoln swimmers tear up the lanes in Huntersville

February 12, 2003 - HUNTERSVILLE — The East Lincoln boys and girls swim teams had a successful day at the Class 3-A West Regionals at the Huntersville Aquatic Center last Friday.

East Lincoln's Patrick Jolley (above) finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 3-A West regionals in Huntersville on Friday to qualify for the state meet. East's Leah Gronning (below) missed qualifying for state in the 100 backstroke but she improved on her personal best time.

February 14, 2003 - VALE — Thursday was a red-letter day for West Lincoln Middle School.

The boys and girls basketball teams both won their conference and county championships.

They did it by beating Lincolnton Middle.

North Lincoln picks its first football coach

Southern Nash offensive coordinator to lead the Knights in their inaugural season

February 14, 2003 - North Lincoln High School has named Southern Nash’s Alonzo “Lonnie” Custer IV as its first football head coach.

The Lincoln County Board of Education approved the hire of Custer Wednesday.

North Lincoln Athletic Director Scott Sekal said this is the man the school wanted to start its football program.

February 17, 2003 - VALE — The Shelby boys and girls basketball teams both played swarming defense to defeat both West Lincoln teams Friday night.

The Lady Golden Lions roared early and cruised the rest of the way to a 55-31 win.

February 19, 2003 - Lincolnton’s best offensive player proved to be its best defender Tuesday night in a 69-55 win over Bandys in the first round of the Midwest 2A Conference tournament.

West and LHS wrestlers advance to state finals

February 19, 2003 - HENDERSONVILLE — West Lincoln’s wrestling team won the Midwest Regional in the state individual playoffs for the first time ever Saturday.

West Lincoln finished with seven state qualifiers. They are listed with their weight class and how they placed in the Region:

103: Matt Avery, second place; 112: Jeremy Pearson, fourth; 130: Brent Gates, third; 135: Josh Hullette, fourth; 140: Steele Barber, fourth; 215: Antonio Rojo, first; heavyweight: Aaron Terry, first.

Lincolnton also had one state qualifier. That was Jason Hammonds at heavyweight placing fourth.

The top four teams in order were: West Lincoln, Mt. Pleasant, Bandys and Newton-Conover.

The state championships will be Friday and Saturday in Winston Salem at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Offensive drought hurts West against Newton

February 19, 2003 - NEWTON — The West Lincoln boys basketball team had a season of close misses and almost wins.

In Tuesday night’s Midwest Conference tournament first round game against Newton-Conover, the Rebels’ season ended in another close miss.

February 21, 2003 - BOILING SPRINGS — The Newton-Conover boys basketball team ran off seven straight points early in the second quarter of the Midwest Conference tournament semifinals Thursday at Gardner-Webb University.

Owen struggled during the season but put things together to win its conference tournament last week.

February 26, 2003 - MAIDEN — The Lincolnton baseball team started the season “on the right foot” with an 11-3 away win over Maiden Tuesday.

The Wolves rapped out 14 hits in the endowment game.

LHS advances; 2nd round today

February 26, 2003 - Lincolnton’s boys basketball team didn’t have long to celebrate its impressive 62-41 win over Owen in the first round of the state playoffs Monday night.

The Wolves had to get ready to face the No. 2 team in the state, West Caldwell, on the road Wednesday.

Soccer Signing

February 26, 2003 - Devin Wade Gentry became the first East Lincoln High soccer player to sign to a college program Monday. "He's got an attitude that allows him to grow," Brevard College soccer coach Michael Louter said of Gentry. Leadership and discipline attracted Brevard's new coach to Gentry, Louter said. Gentry was East's best defensive player for one year and best offensive player for two. He was all-conference last season. Wolves playoff run ends

February 28, 2003 - LENOIR — It was a game of tough breaks for Lincolnton in the second round of the state basketball playoffs.

West Caldwell ran off 12 straight points in the second quarter and kept the Wolves at bay the rest of the way to win 60-51 Wednesday.

LHS boys tennis team loses to South Point

LHS boys tennis team lost to South Point 8-1 in its season opener Tuesday.

The Wolves’ only win came from No. 6 Andrew Allender, who had a 10-5 win in his match.

LHS Coach Chris Hoffman said his team played well for its first game.
