East Middle girls, PCMS boys win in basketball

PUMPKIN CENTER — East Middle girls, PCMS boys won Monday.

In the girls game, East won 48-40.

The scorers for Pumpkin Center were Kayleigh Brown (8 points), Lauren Opstad (9), Kayla Alexander (6), Aleia Hovis, (4) Kathryn Thorne (4), Chastity Morgan (3), Erika Taylor (2), Kathryn Kingsbury (1) and Janna Bourbeau (1)

For East Middle, Moore (20 points), Glenn (17), Webb (6), Covington (3) and Feldon (2) all contributed.

Pumpkin Center won the boys game 57-42.

For PCMS, the scorers were T.J. Skidmore (22), Trent Hopkins (10), Jordan Smith (9), Matt Hovis (5), Adrian Arruza (3), David Ward (2), Robert Howse (2), Alex Keener (2) and Thorne Fox (2).

ELMS - Bell (16), Brady (8), Ilarin (4), D. Lewis (4), Black (4), A. Lewis (3), Henry (2), Farney (2), and Tinsley (1).

 

Cowans Ford Golf Course  head leads tournament

HILTON HEAD, S.C. —Mitch Clodfelter, golf course superintendent from Cowans Ford Country Club of Denver N.C., is leading the national golf championship for golf course superintendents, currently being played.

Some 500 or so superintendents are taking part. Significantly, Mitch won each of the past two years and is looking to create history with a third title on end.

 

Locals win Semi-pro crappie tournament

HARRIS CHAIN, Fla. — Two locals recently won the semi-pro Wildcard Tournament of the Crappie USA.

Mark Leatherman from Vale, N.C. and Jimmy Wright from Lincolnton, N.C. fished Lake Carlton at six feet deep over 10-foot depths with minnows. Their efforts put $1,100 on their take home check and 13.71 pounds of crappie on the scales.

They were first in a competition featuring 25 teams.
