Ashbrook hold off Mustangs’ last runs

JAY MILLER, LTN Sports Correspondent

Feb. 22, 2002 - GASTONIA — The Ashbrook Green Wave used clutch free throw shooting, to hold off East Lincoln 53-46 in second round play of the Big South 3A conference tournament.

Ashbrook made 9 of 12 over the last three and one half minutes of play to best the Mustangs.

East employed a strategy of working the ball for 20 to 30 seconds before starting their offense.

As a result, the Mustangs in executing their game plan controlled the ball very well for most of the night, and when they decided to shoot, made 16 of 33 for the game.

East kept the game close and was down 35-32 at the end of the third. They reduced the lead to one on several occasions in the fourth quarter but allowed Ashbrook to jump out to a five-point lead with 3:37 remaining.

East’s Blake Ketner hit free throws to make it 46-44, with 1:17 left. But East could only manage one more basket from that point, as Ashbrook showed why the are the No. 1 seed, knocking down the free throws with the game on the line.

Jerel Wingate, who gave East a lift they needed early in the game from off the bench, dropped in 11 points. Corey Howard added 11 with Ketner chipping in 10.

Jabbar Adams led the Green Wave with 12, with Britton Thomas and Brad Falls adding 11 each.

The Mustangs finish the year 12-12 overall.

“We had a great year, and a great group of kids,” said Mustangs coach Neil Hodges. “We have lots of seniors and I’m going to miss them.”
