Bandys jump out early to beat Lady Rebels

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

Feb. 20, 2002 - CATAWBA — “They shot well,” said West Lincoln girls coach Allen Hoyle. “Their press hurt us (especially) with their quickness. They stepped into our passing lanes, (got steals) and BAM…it’s 24-5.”

That’s what Hoyle saw in the first quarter of his team’s 73-54 loss against Bandys Tuesday night.

The Lady Trojans simply dominated from the start and led 24-5 at the end of the first quarter and built up to a 30-point lead before cruising to beat West Lincoln in the first round of the Midwest 2A Conference Tournament.

With the press, the Lady Trojans got easy layups on fast breaks and when they had to run their offense they threw it inside to center Ashley Chisholm who scored a game-high 21 points.

“We can’t stop anybody big,” Hoyle said. “We hadn’t done that all year.”

The Lady Rebels saw their season come to a close.

But there was one final highlight that showed class by the seniors.

With time running out in the fourth quarter, senior point guard Kaylon Carpenter who had already made her final high school points of free throws, throw the ball inside to fellow senior Jackie Derr who scored on a short basket.

“We’re all like sisters on the court,” said Carpenter, who finished with 14 points “We tried to play as a team The season didn’t come out like we wanted to but we did well considering we had a lot of young players.”

West Lincoln boys also lost on Tuesday, 65-33 to Shelby. Their season is over as well.
