Bunker Hill Bears spoil Parent Night at Lincolnton

STEVE KAY, LTN Sports Correspondent

Feb. 18, 2002 - At times the Lincolnton-Bunker Hill basketball Friday night looked like a track meet.

If you like run and gun basketball this was your kind of game, Neither team could stop the other.

But it ended like several other games this year for Lincolnton. The Wolves had the halftime lead (35-31) but would somehow let it slip away.

The Bears pulled off a 88-85 overtime win.

Bunker Hill hit four three pointers in the third quarter, including a 30-footer that center Chance Cline nailed at the horn, to take a 55-53 lead going into the fourth period.

The changed hands over and over in the fourth quarter.

The Wolves had a chance to win the game with the ball and 4.5 seconds to play but Eric Wilson’s outside shot rimmed out to send the game into overtime.

The got behind from the start of overtime then went cold hitting only 2-of-10 shots. Meanwhile the Bears made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Wolves.

Sophomore guard Darren Wilson led the Wolves with 30 points while EricWilson had a strong 24 points. Herman Lopez chipped in with while Randall Chambers pitched in with nine.

Four of Bunker Hill’s players reach double figures. Cline had a game-high 36 points.

The Wolves will play at Bandys Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the first round of the Midwest 2A Conference tournament. The Wolves will have to win the tournament to get into the playoffs.

Lady Wolves fall 41-31

The Lady Wolves, the conference’s third-place team, will be in the playoffs.

Friday they got a playoff test against the league’s top team, Bunker Hill.

The Lady Wolves were passing the test at halftime when they led 17-15.

However the same old nemesis bit the Lady Wolves again in the second half, cold shooting and not enough offense.

In the third quarter, Lincolnton scored only five points, all by free throws. The Lady Wolves didn’t make their first basket of the second half until the 5:07 mark in the fourth period. That came on a jumper by Lindsay Sain.

Lincolnton only managed four field goals from the half as the Lady Bears pulled away, outscoring Lincolnton 26-14 in the final two quarters to win going away.

Cold Shooting was, perhaps, an understatement. The Lady Wolves shot a meager 24 percent for the game.

Senior Lauren Bartholomew led the Lady Wolves with 11 points in her final regular season game. Andrea Stroup added eight and Shantae Shank pitched in with seven.

The Lady Wolves will open the conference tournament Tuesday at home at 7 p.m. against Newton-Conover.
