Rebels clinch second consecutive Midwest 2A title

West Lincoln defeated Shelby, Bunker Hill and Chase to give them a 25-1 record on the year

Adding three more wins to their record allowed the West Lincoln wrestlers to secure their second straight conference title.

Head Coach Butch Ross and his wrestlers defeated Shelby 58-7, Bunker Hill 81-0, and Chase 75-6 to end their regular season with a record of 25-1 and a conference record of 6-0. 

Coach Ross was very pleased with his wrestlers.  Ross said, “All of the boys worked hard during the season and contributed to our conference title.”

On Friday, the wrestlers celebrated Senior Night recognizing the seniors that have helped lead the team. Steele Barber, Will Bess, Brent Gates, and Bradley Goins are the only four seniors on the team of forty-two wrestlers. 

With the regular season behind them, the Rebels are now working on Saturday’s Conference Tournament. With a week off, Coach Ross hopes to get himself and the team healed up and work on a few things so that the team will be ready to come out strong on Saturday.

Leading the Rebels into the conference tournament are: Matt Avery 19-3, Zeb Elmore 27-3, Steele Barber 29-4, Daniel Scronce 23-5, and Antonio Rojo 30-2.

After Saturday, the team will enter a grueling week of wrestling in the North Carolina Dual Team State Tournament. They will have to accomplish the task of winning the title by winning five matches against the top teams in the Western and Eastern Region.

The Rebels will be hosting the conference tournament on Saturday, January 31.  The tournament will start at 9:30.
