Wolves extend streak, Lady Knights win and Mustangs lose

Published January 19, 2004

Lincolnton won their seventh consecutive game Friday night 66-60 over Bunker Hill. Darren Wilson was the main weapon, connecting for six three-pointers in the contest. He finished with a game-high 26 points.

Wolves head coach Bob Cowie was thrilled with his guard’s play.

“He shot the ball extremely well. He had a run in the second and fourth quarters where he hit a couple of threes right in a row,” he said.

In the fourth quarter, the Bears tried to shoot themselves back into the game.
“They hit five three pointers and got back in it. Before that we had been playing a good 2-3 zone and we were contesting those threes, but they just hit them,” Cowie said.

The Wolves unbeaten streak will face a tough test with the No. six team in the state, the East Rutherford Cavaliers paying a visit to Lincolnton on Tuesday night. Cowie believes the Cavaliers are as good as the hype.

“They’ve not been beaten in the conference. It will be a big game for us, extremely athletic and present a lot of problems for you,” he said.

The Wolves record is 11-3 overall and a 4-1 record in the Midwest 2A.

Linc- Zack Gibson 2, Eric Wilson 13, Dusty Friday 7, Darren Wilson 26, Jordy Jefferies 9, Kyle Snyder 2, Josh Keener 5, Brant Eagle 2.

Bunker- Miller 2, Deal 11, Stewart 14, James 8, Brown 2, Turbevillle 10, Patterson 6, Kaylor 1, Hartline 6.

The Terry Schenck era at East Lincoln has yet to pull off a win. The Mustangs fell 65-57 to the East Gaston Warriors Friday night and it was a familiar story for the home team.

The Mustangs were down 50-48 at one point in the fourth quarter with about two minutes left, but were unable to get over the hump to take full control of the ball game.

“It’s the same situation. We’re so close. I don’t know what it’s going to take, but we just can’t win one,” Schenck said.

Darin Dellinger, who has struggled at times with his shooting, led the Mustangs with 23 points. Schenck said his junior guard tried to keep them in the game.

“He’s been in a slump. I was glad to see him do that, it helped the team,” he said.

Dante Roseboro had a solid game with 12 points.

The Mustangs remain winless in the Big South 3A Conference at 0-6, they are 5-11 overall.

East Gaston- Brown 1, Wilkinson 7, Hare 13, Buchanon 14, Shawn Helms 19, Moore 11.

East Lincoln- Darin Dellinger 23, Jadarious Roseboro 2, Jamelle Lowery 7, Dante Roseboro 12, Grant Covington 9, Josh Davis 4.

Varsity Women’s

The Lady Wolves fell to 3-11 and 1-4 in the conference with a 66-41 loss to Bunker Hill Friday night.

Lindsey Sain, who is still not healthy, led the Wolves in scoring with 11. Jessie Cline chipped in with 8 points.

The Lady Wolves were done in by solid post play of their opponent, but head coach David Johnson insist they aren’t giving up.

“We’ve been trying to keep it positive for the girls. It’s been a struggle with the circumstances that have been there,” he said.

In the midst of their tumultuous season Johnson is trying to change their offensive philosophy.

“We’ve tried to change our philosophies from an up-tempo team to a half-court driving team,” he said.

Johnson has been proud of several girls who he feels have responded during of adverse circumstances.

“I’m proud of Andrea Smith, Jessie Cline and Brittany Jones for stepping up. It’s been tough,” he said.

The North Lincoln Lady Knights improved their record Friday night with a 43-40 win over Polk County. The Knights, now 4-12 overall and 1-2 in the Southern Foothills 1A Conference, along with their coach were happy with the win.

“I’m tickled to death with the win. We played as good a balanced basketball game as we’ve played all year. We’ve matured a lot and learned a lot about ourselves in the last couple of weeks,” he said.

Sara McCall led the Lady Knights with 12 points and teammate Jessie Devine had a solid game with 11 points. Caroline Farris contributed nicely with nine.

Head coach Mark Lackey was pleased with his team’s passing in the game.

“We did such a good job reversing the basketball. When you do that, that opens up shot opportunities for everybody. Our floor spacing was good and our movement of the basketball was solid too,” he said.

Lackey, also, believes the Lady Knights still have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.

“It really sets up in a good position to possibly make a run at the playoffs. We’ve got some teams coming up that we were in the first time we played them and had a chance to win a couple of them too,” he said.

North- Sara McCall 12, Jessie Devine 11, Caroline Farris 9, Brittany Mabe 6, Lindsey Smith 5.

Polk- Black 10, McCord 8, Cunningham 7, Wright 6, Staley 5, Durham 3, Reece 1.
