Rebels wrestling takes down Cavaliers

Published January 16, 2004

By ELIZABETH ROSS CARPENTER, LTN Correspondent

————————————

The West Lincoln Wrestlers came out ready for a win against East Rutherford in a Conference make-up match on Thursday night at home.  With a score of 56-9, they improved their conference record to 4-0 and their season record to 22-1.

The match began with Dustin Hester winning by forfeit and Daniel Scronce defeating Justin Butler 15-7 to give West Lincoln a 10-0 lead.

The Cavaliers were quick to answer with two hard-fought wins in the 171 and 189 lb. weight class.  Then, the Rebels took control, winning nine out of the next ten matches.

Antonio Rojo, Tyler Wilfong, Zeb Elmore, and Brent Gates gave the Rebels a big edge by coming through with pins.  Antonio Rojo, West Lincoln’s 275 lb. wrestler said, “Coach Ross told me to pin before I walked on the mat so that’s what I went out there to do and accomplished it.”

Head Coach Butch Ross was pleased with the match.  “East Rutherford came in ready to try to win the match. They weren’t intimidated and even though the score was big, it was a much closer match than that.”

The Rebels will be back in action Friday night at Shelby.  With only three more conference matches left, the Rebels are on top for the Conference title. Senior Brent Gates said, “If we continue to wrestle like this, we will have a great chance to win the State.”
