Rebels beat Bandys

Published January 14, 2004

West wrestling in pursuit of crown

By ELIZABETH ROSS CARPENTER, LTN Correspondent

————————————

The  No. 4 ranked West Lincoln wrestlers were back in action on Tuesday night against No. 5 ranked Bandys. It was one of the key match-ups for the Midwest 2A Conference this year.

Coach Butch Ross and his wrestlers were able to defeat Bandys 38-24. This huge win moved the Rebels one step closer to winning the conference title.

Bandys came out with a 3-0 lead at the end of the first match. Jeremy Pearson, 119lb. wrestler, had a much-needed win over B.J. Little, tying the score at 3-3.

At the 130 lb. weight class, Tyler Wilfong had another key win.  He defeated Patrick McIntosh 10-2, giving the Rebels the lead.

Wilfong said, “We all did our best and came through when we needed to especially when Jeremy Pearson defeated his guy.”

“Coach Ross knew we had the match won when Daniel Scronce stepped up and pinned his opponent.”

The Trojans were quick to respond winning four of the next five matches and jumping out to a 24-13 lead over the Rebels. The West Lincoln wrestlers would not let this get them down, they responded by winning the last five matches of the night.

Antonio Rojo sealed the win with a decision over Bandy’s 275lb. wrestler, Matt Woodlief.  From that point on, the Rebels didn’t look back.  West Lincoln improved its record to 21-1 on the season.

Head coach Butch Ross hopes to take tonight’s momentum into the make-up match against East Rutherford.

“It was a real hard-fought match on both sides. Both teams wrestled well and the boys came through and beat a very good team.”  The Rebels will be wrestling at 7 p.m. on Thursday at home.
