The West Lincoln wrestlers were looking for revenge on Tuesday night when they met Newton Conover and that is exactly what happened.

Head coach Butch Ross and his wrestlers got the chance for a rematch against the team that tarnished their undefeated record on Saturday. This time, the Rebels came out on top defeating Newton 35-25. John Harkey, West Lincoln’s 103 lb. wrestler, summed up the match by saying, “Everybody wrestled their hearts out,” Ross said.

This match began with Newton scoring six points, but the Rebels were quick to answer with six points when West Lincoln’s 275 lb. wrestler, Antonio Rojo, pinned Kyle Brock.

The Rebels were able to take a lead in the match when Harkey defeated Eric Webster 7-5 in overtime. He had lost to Webster in their first two meetings of the season.

Each time Newton-Conover would get close in score, West Lincoln continued to add to theirs. It was during the 171 lb. weight class when the Rebels clinched the match. They were able to do this with a win by Keane Steele over Joel Dietrich 17-3. Steele said, “John Harkey really got the team going by beating a guy that he had lost to twice. The rest of us went out there and did what we had to do

“This has been a real great day with the birth of a new grandson, Chade Ross Norman, and coming up here tonight and beating the No. 3 ranked team in the state,” Ross said.

Many people favored Newton Conover to be the Midwest 2A Conference Champions. With this win, the Rebels are one step closer to establishing themselves as the front-runner for the Conference title. With a record of 20-1, they will be back in action on Friday, January 9 at 7:00 against East Rutherford at West Lincoln.
