Bethea wins tourney, Stroup is solid

Kendall Bethea competed in the 28th Annual Phil Wallace Junior Golf Championship hosted by River Bend Country Club in Shelby, NC this past Monday.

Kendall posted a score of 37 on his 9-hole event to win his 11 years old and under age division by two strokes.

The highlight of his round was when he drove the No. 13 green on his tee shot and sunk a 25-foot putt for an eagle.

Kendall’s brother Kenny finished third in his 14-to-15 year old age division.

This past weekend Kendall’s golf skills performance was re-televised on the Golf Channel’s Drive, Chip and Putt show. The event was hosted by Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte back in the spring.

Editor’s note: Kenny Bethea provided the information about his son Kendall. Guilford College provided information on Charlie Stroup.

Sophomore Charlie Stroup, former Lincolnton Wolve, just completed his second season at Guilford College.

A 5’7” 185 pound outside linebacker Stroup appeared in all 10 games on defense. His services were also used long-snapping for a punt team that helped punter Christian Adams rank fourth among NCAA Division III leaders.

Stroup finished with a career-high 32 tackles (20 solo) and had four tackles for a loss of 13 yards.

He made a career-high eight tackles in the Quakers’ season finale against league rival Emory & Henry. Stroup had five tackles in a road loss to nationally ranked league champion Bridgewater.

Stroup will return for his junior season in 2004. He is a returning letterman.
