Newton’s Red Devils take two from Rebels
LTN Staff Reports
Jan. 30, 2002 - Led by freshman Julius Powell's 24 points and six blocked shots, Newton-Conover pulled away down the stretch for a 72-52 win over West
Lincoln Tuesday night.
The road win kept the Red Devils all alone in first place in the Midwest 2A Conference with an 8-1 record (11-7 overall), while the Rebels slipped to 2-7 in
the league and 6-13 overall.
West Lincoln came in with a sound game plan against the 6-foot-8 Powell. The idea was to limit Powell's touches with a tight zone, then take the ball to the basket aggressively in the hope
of getting the big freshman in foul trouble.
Although the Rebels were in the game until the four minute mark of the fourth quarter, they had no answer for Powell's offensive skills and shot-blocking and
shot-altering presence in the middle.
Not only did Powell swat away shots, he was the main reason the Rebels shot only 5-for-23 from the field in the second half.
"Our kids went at him hard, but he is a talented freshman," West Lincoln coach Jason Kingery said of Powell. "You can't teach height, and height dictates your shot. They have
an inside presence in the middle and we don't."
Powell missed only two shots all night, going 7-for-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line. Among his many highlights were a 3-pointer from the deep corner and a slam dunk off a lob.
Despite the display by Powell, West Lincoln trailed by only six points, 52-46, after scoring the first basket of the fourth quarter. It looked like the game
might go to the wire at that point, but the Rebels went stone cold and Newton-Conover closed out the game with a 20-6 run.
At the four-minute mark, the Red Devils went to their delay game with a 10-point lead, 62-52. The Rebels were forced out of their zone and into a man-for-man. Over the next minute and a
half, Newton-Conover got three layups out of its spread, two of them by guard Mark Stiver.
Stiver's second driving basket with 2:10 remaining gave N-C a 68-52 lead and the game.
The Rebels got 11 points from Jeremy Parker and eight each from Cody Blanton and Zach Franklin.
"We can't get down at the end of the game," said Kingery. "They dictated the outcome. They forced us out of our zone, and that is a disadvantage for us."
Newton-Conover jumped out front 11-4, but the Rebels rallied to take a 28-27 lead on a Franklin basket with 2:24 left in the second quarter. However, that
would prove to be the Rebels' only lead as N-C responded with a 9-2 run to go into the half ahead 36-30.
