Green Wave swallow Mustangs East girls get big win in OT

Jan. 28, 2002 - GASTONIA — The Ashbrook Green Wave proved it was the cream of the crop in the Big South 3A Conference with a convincing 73-44 in over
East Lincoln Friday play.
Ashbrook (16-1, 7-0), did it with a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Mustangs (10-6, 3-4).
The Green Wave outscored the Mustangs in each of the four quarters with a game plan that worked to perfection.
The Green Wave utilized its quickness and aggressive play to successfully hold East’s big men in check all night. The taller frontline of Ashbrook held The Mustangs’ top inside players Tripp
Miller, Jason Burgess and Blake Ketner combined six points. The last time the two teams faced each other. The three only managed 10.
Britton Thomas led Ashbrook with 14 and teammate Jazz Cathcart chipped in 13.
East’s Jerrel Wingate contribution off the bench came in the final quarter, hitting two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws. Tripp Webb nailed two treys and
finished with 6 points.
Cory Howard led the Mustangs with 10 points. Wingate chipped in eight and Whitt added seven.

Ashbrook got most of its points from Thomas (14), Cathcart (13), Jabarr Adams (10), Blake Robinson (9), Darius Sanders (6),
East was led by Cory Howard (10), Wingate (8), Arthur Whitt (7), Webb (6), Smith (3), Cory Cavazos (3,) Blake Ketner (2), Jason Burgess (2), Tripp Miller (2), Matthew McIntosh (1).
East girls beat Ashbrook in OT
Tiffany Finandis scored 15 points and Sabrina Abraham came up with a big defensive play at the end as East Lincoln beat Ashbrook 44-41 in overtime.
With a three-point lead and the final seconds in the game, Abraham stepped up big to block an attempted three in the final seconds, preserving the East lead
and victory.
It was defense all night long.
The visiting East Lincoln Mustangs fed off of their intense defensive play to pull out a victory
The Green Wave jumped out to a 20-15 lead at the half but the Lady Mustangs came back roaring with a 15-point stampede in the third period. East went up 30-27 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, East went up by four with less than three minutesleft with a three-point play from Jennifer Henley.
However, Ashbrook, made key baskets and free throws down the stretch and converted on a pair with four seconds to tie the game 37-37 to send the game into overtime.
Once in overtime, Ashbrook charged out first on two free throws to regain the lead. East’s Leslie Marlowe canned a tremendous three from the corner to give the
Lady Mustangs back the lead, 40-39 with 1:50 left.
Ashbrook added two more with 47 seconds remaining and the lead 41-40.
But it would be their last of the game as East’s Ashley England scored two on a baseline jumper and Shanna Rendleman dropped in two clutch free throws to make
it 44-41.
After Abraham’s block, East secured a conference road win.
East’s coach Brian Lytton was beaming about being on the winning end of an overtime game.
“Ashbrook made key baskets and free throws and offensively. We had a chance but couldn’t put them away. The reason we won the game was our defense.”
The Mustangs’ squads will next play host to the Forestview Jaguars on Tuesday night.
