Jan. 23, 2002 - BELMONT — The visiting Mustangs broke open a close contest with a strong fourth quarter, making 11 of 12 free throws with the game on
the line to defeat the South Point Red Raiders 67-62 in Big South 3A Conference play.
The Mustangs started slowly and found themselves down 31-23 to a hot-hooting Red Raider team at the half.
If that wasn’t bad enough, they spotted South Point seven unanswered points and a fifteen point lead to open the third before East’s Seniors Cory Howard and
Tripp Miller decided they had had enough.
They countered with a run of 11 points and after baskets by Tyrone Rendleman and Blake Ketner closed the Red Raider lead to seven. A three-point play by T.J. Smith and a huge three by Jerrel
Wingate as time expired in the third made it a one point ball game, 45-44.
Tripp Miller opened the fourth with two of his game-high 21 points at the 7:30 mark to give East the lead at 46-45.
However, South Point jumped right back in front on a three-point play by Alvin Williams and a trey by Dusty Baskett, 51-46 at the 6:10 mark.
The Mustangs and the Indians exchanged leads for almost the next minute and a half. They were like two prizefighters slugging it out.
But Miller scored a basket with 1:50 left to play to give East the lead good. 60-58.
The Mustangs came up with big plays at the end to secure the lead. Blake Ketner stepped up big with a block on South Point’s end then back on East’s end, Tripp Webb hit a pair of free
throws to make it 62-58 with 39 seconds left. Ketner dropped in two more with 25 seconds remaining.
South scored and contested the inbound play but East’s Webb broke away, flipped a pass to Arthur Whitt, who fed a pass to a breaking Tripp Miller, for a two-handed monster slam dunk as time
expired for the final 67-62.
It was, said Mustang Coach Neil Hodges, a “nice come back, good victory, getting East to 3-3 in conference play, which is what they came over here to get.”
East improved their overall record to 10-5.
Jason Burgess, who suffered a minor knee injury but says he is OK, but had to watch most of the second half from the bench.
“Offensive rebounding and getting the ball inside was a key to the comeback for (us),” Burgess said. “We did a good job in the second half coming back and the
three by Jerrel (Wingate) at the end of the third was big and gave them momentum.”
East will visit the Ashbrook Green Wave on Friday night.
