Mustangs wrestlers steadily improving

Staff Reports

Jan. 21, 2002 - The East Lincoln wrestling team is making a name for itself.

With new head coach Jim Prevost, the Mustangs as of last week have posted a 8-10 record.

But that’s despite losing 16 wrestlers from the start of the season.

“This first year is going well,” Prevost said. “Overall, the team is improving.”

The Mustangs have placed well in four of the six tournaments they have wrestled in.

They came in third in the Charlotte Catholic Tournament and fourth in North Mecklenburg, Bandys and Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds tournaments.

A few of East Lincoln’s best wrestlers are Nick Smith, Joe Hanks and JoJo Dellinger.

Prevost said Smith is a joy to coach. He’s leads by example and personality.

Hanks who is 20-6 in the 112 weight division “has done a good job” for the squad according to Prevost.

Dellinger may be the story of the year with the team. He’s 25-0 and ranked in the top three in his weight class.

Recently, Dellinger got his 102nd career win which is new school record.

Prevost said he’s an outstanding wrestler and and outstanding leader.

As for all the rest, Prevost said they have all filled in well.

Prevost credits the progress of the team so far to coaches (David Smith and Chris Davis) and the team’s supporters such as the parents and the team managers.”

East Lincoln next match will be Friday at home against Ashbrook.
