Lincolnton boys beat Bunker Hill, girls fall

Jan. 21, 2002 - CLAREMONT —Lincolnton’s Eric Wilson poured in a game-high 20 points to propel the Wolves to a 62-53 win over Bunker Hill Friday.
In a game of runs, the Wolves made more of its opportunities to pull away slowly in the final quarter. The Wolves’ quickness and pressure defense were also key, especially in the second period.
The Wolves turned a five-point, first quarter difference into a five-point lead at the half. The Wolves went on a 13-0 run to close out the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Bunker Hill scored 12 straight to pull within one point after being behind 42-30.
However, the Wolves again went on another run, this time outscoring the Bears, 9-0 to start the 4th quarter to open up some breathing room.
The Wolves spread the court in the final three minutes and made enough free throws to keep Bunker Hill at bay.
Wilson hit 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Also in double figures were Robbie Lewis with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Darren Wilson chipped in 11 points.
With the win, the Wolves move to 4-2 in the Midwest 2A Conference. This was the Wolves 4th conference win in succession.
East Rutherford comes to Lincolnton Tuesday to close out the first round of league games.
Scorers for Lincolnton were, Brian Finger (4), Darren Wilson (11), Junior Smith (4), Randal Chambers (2) and Herman Lopez (5).
Bunker Hill 51, Lady Wolves 32
Conference leader Bunker Hill turned up the defense to start the fourth period to snuff out a Lincolnton comeback, 51-32.
The Lady Wolves cut an 18- point, Lady Bears’ lead to eight at the end of the third quarter.
Bunker Hill’s 2-3 zone and pressure man-to-man, throttled Lincolnton’s young squad for most of the game and held Lincolnton to 29 percent shooting from the
field for the game.
Freshman Lindsey Sain, recorded a season-high 17 points to pace the Lady Wolves.
Bunker Hill’s defense limited leading scorers, Andrea Stroup, and Lauren Bartholomew, to only six points each and 4-of-21 shooting.
After the Lady Wolves had closed to 35-27 after three quarters, the Lady Bears reasserted themselves to pull away with a 16-5 in the final period to win going
a way.
Player of the Year candidate, Tammy Lineberger led Bunker Hill with 24 points. Lineberger exploded in the second half for 16 points.
The Lady Bears’ height inside was a big factor throughout the game.
With the loss, Lincolnton drops to 4-2 in conference play. Lincolnton will host East Rutherford Tuesday.
