Boger City Wesleyan takes Christmas to the curb

Published December 12, 2003

By DIANE TURBYFILL, Staff Writer

————————————

Boger City Wesleyan Church is serving up Christmas at curbside tonight and Saturday.

The church will host its first drive-thru live nativity scene, “The Road to Bethlehem: A Unique Journey Into the Past.”

Pastor Brandon Munger says the event will offer a unique opportunity in the area. Participants will drive up to the church and receive a CD or cassette tape. The audio guide will tell the story of Christmas while members of the congregation act out the five scenes.

“It’s a family oriented event that only takes 10 to 15 minutes,” he says.

Scenes will take viewers from today’s Christmas scene back to the past. Mary and Joseph will travel to Bethlehem where Jesus will be born in a manger.

Those coming to view the nativity aren’t under any pressure to join the church. In fact, viewers don’t have to be religious to experience the meaning of Christmas, Munger says.

“We’re hoping to reach out to people that aren’t confident about coming into church,” he says.

Munger has been pastor at Boger City Wesleyan for seven months. Originally from upstate New York, he says drive-thru nativity scenes are not uncommon up north.

“They’ve been using this, and it’s been quite successful,” he says.

Munger has been working on the technical aspect of the project.

“I used to work in a recording studio so we’ve got all the equipment,” he says.

Members of the local church have been receptive to the idea. About 25 people have painted sets, made costumes and volunteered to play roles in the nativity.

“The beauty of this as a production is everyone can have an opportunity to contribute,” he says.

Many materials have been donated and others purchased. Munger says pulling together to build the manger and other sets has been a rewarding experience — even before the production opens to the public.

“I’ve seen a lot of people light up. It’s given them a chance to use their talents,” says Munger.

“The Road to Bethlehem: A Unique Journey Into the Past” will wind behind Boger City Wesleyan Church, 2803 E. N.C. 27, tonight and Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

There is no cost for the event. Anyone who does not have a CD or cassette player in their car will be provided one for the drive-thru experience.
