4-Hers win top awards

Lincoln County 4-H members from the Bits and Bridles 4-H Club have been on the road to three national 4-H Horse Program competitions this fall.

Members competed at the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championship in Georgia in August. Quarter Horse Congress in Ohio in October and Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-Up in Kentucky in November.

Kelly Wentz, 19, daughter of Deborah Wentz of Newton participated on the state winning North Carolina 4-H Horse Judging Team “B” and Hippology Team “A” at the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships.

Wentz’s Judging Team placed 4th High Team Overall, 5th in Oral Reasons and 1st in Team Placings. Her Hippology Team won the champion title, and she placed as 5th Overall Hippology Individual at the Southern Regional competition. At the Quarter Horse Congress, Wentz’s Hippology Team won Overall, Stations and placed 2nd in Team Problem and 3rd in Judging.

Her Hippology Team placed 1st of 23 teams at the Eastern National 4-H Round-Up and Kelly placed as 9th Overall Hippology Individual.

Deborah Wentz, volunteer leader of the Bits and Bridles 4-H Club, coached the NC 4-H Hippology Teams through each national event.

Casey Wentz, 16, son of Deborah Wentz of Newton participated on the state winning North Carolina 4-H Hippology Team “B” at Southern Regionals and earned the Reserved Champion title.

Maria Schell, 16, daughter of Denny and Becky Schell of Conover teamed with Casey Wentz to compete in 4-H Horse Presentations. Casey and Maria placed 1st with their presentation at Quarter Horse Congress and placed 2nd at the Eastern National 4-H Round-Up.
