Fun And Flurries Before The Ice Strikes

December 6, 2002 - Fat snow flurries blanketed Lincoln County Wednesday, sending children home from school and closing area businesses. The storm transformed the area into a winter wonderland. (Below right) Sixth-grader Sammy Foster didn't let the snowy weather keep him from riding his bike through town.  (Below left) Sanchanze Merritt picks up Tyron Roberts Wednesday morning at Battleground Elementary. Peace poster contest winners named

December 11, 2002 - Students from five Lincoln County Schools participated in the 15th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest, along with some 325,000 others from around the world. This contest encourages children, ages 11-13, to creatively express what peace means to them.

December 13, 2002 - The Lincoln Choral Guild, under the direction of Gene Heavner, filled the First Baptist Church sanctu-ary with songs of the season Saturday. The concert also featured Carolina Style Chorus, Sweet Adeline's International under the direction of Jean Danaher. Making Music: Teacher’s cross-cultural journey is one to note

December 13, 2002 - Denise Baxter-Yoder’s passion is now a second career.

A sixth-grade teacher at Catawba Intermediate School, Baxter-Yoder has enjoyed creative writing since she was in elementary school.

Volunteers provide food and toys for hundreds

Santa’s helpers

December 20, 2002 - Santa’s little helpers are alive and well at Christian Ministry of Lincoln County.

Two of them act as volunteers each year to co-chair the ministry’s Christmas Fund, a drive to collect money, food and toys.

Troupe to offer opportunity for teens

December 20, 2002 - Area teens will have a new opportunity in the performing arts.

Peggie Boring, Gaston College professor and Lincoln Theatre Guild second vice-president, is heading up a new thespian troupe in the area.

Methodist cookbook available

December 20, 2002 - First United Methodist Church will publish its second cookbook, “A Feast of Tradition.”

The first publication was completed about 10 years ago.

“We’ve had so many requests, everyone asked for another publication,” said Pat Lawing with the cookbook committee.

2003 historical calendars on sale

December 20, 2002 - A look at history is offered each month in the pages of the Lincoln County Historical Association and Lincoln County Museum of History’s 2003 calendar.

The cover of the calendar shows the Seagle family in 1910 in front of the old Rev. Alfred J. Fox place. The black and white family portrait is a preview of what’s to come inside.

Page family and friend finds the spotlight, again

December 30, 2002 - For the Page family, fame keeps coming their way.

James, a Dental Lab Technician, and Beverly, who does James’ bookkeeping and is a stay-at-home mom, Page, their daughter, Laura, 18, and a family friend, Andrew Seagle, 19, a local guitarist, recently spent a day on the set of “Dawson’s Creek.”
