Page family and friend finds the spotlight, again

By SARA FUNDERBURKE, Special to the LTN

December 30, 2002 - For the Page family, fame keeps coming their way.

James, a Dental Lab Technician, and Beverly, who does James’ bookkeeping and is a stay-at-home mom, Page, their daughter, Laura, 18, and a family friend, Andrew Seagle, 19, a local guitarist, recently spent a day on the set of “Dawson’s Creek.”

For the past few years, the family has been lucky enough to meet and interact with some celebrities.

Beverly had a makeover on “Oprah” after her daughter Catherine wrote a letter to the show. They have been on other television shows including “Rosie” and “TRL.”

They have also met many notable people like Aaron Carter, Usher, Mandy Moore, and Laura even danced on stage with N-Sync twice.

James and Beverly attended a “Dawson’s Creek” casting-call in Charlotte and were selected to be extras in an upcoming episode.

Laura, a senior at Lincolnton High School, went with her parents. Beverly tried to get her to dress more classy. Instead, Laura kept her unique indie-punk style and was told she was “perfect.”

She and Andrew were cast in a punk-rock band scene.

Wednesday, Dec. 11 began at 7:30 a.m. for Laura and Andrew. It ended approximately 15 long hours later. They filmed at Mythos, a Charlotte club.

Andrew was pre-picked as a member of a band and Laura was a band groupie.

While in a holding area, people came in to check her make-up and wardrobe. Andrew’s wardrobe was chosen the previous night but adjustments were made to Laura’s regular clothes to fit the scene.

The wardrobe people had her change her jewelry, shirt, shoes and even her socks. Some of the clothes were not her normal style. They also made her make-up extremely dark but thought her hair was great.

After practicing crowd surfing 18 times with Audry, a character on “Dawson’s Creek,” they practiced with a stunt double. The scene took about five-and-one-half hours to create.

Andrew’s band member scenes were short. His main scene was a party on a bus after a concert. He and Laura shot a total of six scenes.

Andrews favorite part of his experience was the free food.

“Hair and make-up was my favorite because the same people who do the stars was doing mine. I was even sat in the chair beside a stunt double,” Laura said.

After their long day and free food, her mom and dad were brought into the spotlight.

James and Beverly Page’s day started a little later. At 3 p.m. Dec. 12, they found themselves in a holding room at a church in Weddington.

The wardrobe crew looked over everyone to make sure they were dressed correctly. Beverly had to change her lipstick from a natural to a fuchsia color.

While she had her hair put into a French twist, James was taken to change his shirt because too many other men were wearing the same color.

Joshua Jackson, who plays the role of Pacey on the show, walked in while Beverly was waiting on her hair to be done. As soon as he sat in a chair, he slid out on to the floor.

“He got up and made a good recovery,” Beverly said.

Sara and Kevin, two other characters on the WB drama, were there also.

“The characters are real nice, they introduce themselves and speak to people,” Beverly said.

There were approximately 60 to 80 extras in the cocktail party scene with Beverly and James. The scene was taped from end to beginning not beginning to end.

The Pages were chosen as one of 20 couples to be on the front porch of the house where they were filming. It was at the same house where “Shallow Hal” was filmed. They had to walk to a car to “leave” the party numerous times. Sometimes a black Lincoln, other times a silver Lexus.

“If you didn’t go when you were suppose to, someone was there to push you,” said Beverly laughing.

At the actual cocktail party, Beverly was paired with three different men and never with James. The director continually arranged James with blonde women.

Around 12 hours later at 3 a.m., the scene was wrapped up.

Beverly said she enjoyed seeing her husband’s reaction to everything because he had never been in entertainment before. She was a commercial model in Charlotte for six years.

Even though they were cast as extras, they all received payment for the job.

After a taste of fame, Laura has set a new goal — to meet the Backstreet Boys.

Beverly had a piece of advice for her daughter.

“The more you can expect of life, the better. If you don’t try you will never get the chance.”
