Troupe to offer opportunity for teens
By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer
December 20, 2002 - Area teens will have a new opportunity in the performing arts.
Peggie Boring, Gaston College professor and Lincoln Theatre Guild second vice-president, is heading up a new thespian troupe in the area.
“It will provide opportunities — educational and performing,” says Boring.
The group Boring hopes to start is a chapter of the International Thespian Society, a theater organization for students in high school. The experience targets
teens interested in presenting quality productions for the community which are culturally diverse.
Boring says teaching teenagers is rewarding.
“I love working with high school students. They’re very enthusiastic and idealistic.”
She hopes the troupe will be comprised of students from different cultures and backgrounds.
“This charter would make them a part of something larger than Lincoln County.”
Boring has been an English teacher and curriculum designer for more than 20 years. She feels the program brings awareness to students and the community.
The group will put on plays, travel to competitions and serve the community.
As North Carolina State Director of the Educational Theatre Association/International Thespian Society, Boring believes the troupe can offer more than a drama
class.
“(The troupe) will get kids from lots of different cultures to work together.”

Boring will also be instructing Dynamics in Acting for adults at Gaston College Jan. 7 through March 11 at the Lincoln Campus. The course will include
review of relaxation, acting and ensemble-building techniques, scoring a monologue/scene, using the voice, developing the imagination, improvisation and listening skills.
