Peace poster contest winners named

From staff reports

December 11, 2002 - Students from five Lincoln County Schools participated in the 15th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest, along with some 325,000 others from around the world. This contest encourages children, ages 11-13, to creatively express what peace means to them.

“It was really difficult to select local winning entries from our county since so many of the posters were outstanding this year” was the opinion shared by the Lincolnton Lions Club Peace Poster Committee.

Entries were judged on originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Dream of Peace”

Winners are: Kathryn Thorne, Pumpkin Center Middle School, grade 8; Thomas LeFevre, S. Grove Christian Academy, grade 6; Krista Moore, E. Lincoln Middle School, grade 8; Cameron Baker, Lincolnton Middle School, grade 8; and Wesley Gwinn, Long Shoals Wesleyan Academy, grade 7.

Their posters now compete in a District-level contest against entries submitted by students in the five-county area comprising District 31-C, which currently has 37 Lions Clubs.

One District winner will go on to compete in a state contest in Raleigh. Ultimately, one grand prize winner will be selected from 24 international finalists. The grand prize includes $2500 cash, plus an all-expenses-paid trip for the winner and two family members to New York City for the awards ceremony on Lions Day at the United Nations. The 23 other finalists each receive Merit Certificates and $500 cash.

“I am impressed by the amount of effort exhibited by all our local students,” said Lincolnton Lions Club President Lib Spencer.

“It’s obvious that these young people have strong ideas of what peace means to them. I’m proud that we were able to provide them the opportunity to share their visions, and we hope they do well in the district contest.”

Locally, each school’s first and second place winners receive cash awards and their schools are given permanent wall plaques by the Lincolnton Lions.

The community is invited to view and enjoy 18 of these posters now on display in the Charles R. Jonas Library at 306 West Main Street in Lincolnton.

Poster contest committee members were Chris and Karen Packer, John Miller, Jan Johnson).
