Flying the American flag has its rewards
By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer
Dec. 28, 2001 - Polly Bryant has taken on a task larger than she expected.
As flag chairman of the Jacob Forney Chapter, National Daughters of the American Revolution, Bryant decided to thank Lincoln residents for flying the American
flag.
“Every year I try to do something concerning the flag,” she said.
Bryant gathered information about the American flag and condensed it into a page of flag facts written in the first person from the flag’s point of view.
The facts describe the struggle Americans have had defending it.
Bryant planned to drop off the blue fliers at homes displaying the nation’s flag.
This was before Sept. 11.
Since the terrorist attacks on America, the red, white and blue flags have become a common sight, displayed on almost every home.
“Boy, they popped out at every house,” said Bryant.
So she and her granddaughter, Kayda Caldwell hit the pavement. Caldwell, 10, is a Girl Scout and is helping her grandmother distribute the fliers.
The flier not only thanks those displaying the flag, but offers a little education, reading in part:
I was born June 14, 1777.
I am the refugee for the oppressed people of the world.
My stars, clustered together, show 50 states united as one for God and country.
“Old Glory” is my nickname.
I am your flag!
God Bless America.
Bryant and Caldwell will continue to distribute fliers, but admit that not everyone will get one. Because of safety, delivery at homes on busier streets may
not be attempted.
Once the project wraps up, Bryant will begin brainstorming for next year’s project.

Last year she headed up the local project of burning worn flags.
