Long Shoals Wesleyan celebrates a century
Birthday Bash
From staff reports
Dec. 14 - A 100th birthday bash recently was held in the Long Shoals community.
The party, attended by more than 300, was not for one of the longest living individuals in the area, rather for a presence in the community for the past
century.
Long Shoals Wesleyan Church celebrated its birthday Dec. 2, drawing former pastors, staff, church members and public officials.
“It was terrific — everything that we had envisioned for the day,” said Rev. Ron Haithcock, the church’s pastor.
The celebration included a service, a centennial pictorial directory, a feast and the unearthing of a time capsule from 1976. The opening of the glass jar
revealed pictures, church bulletins and a magazine with Jimmy Carter on the cover.
Items in the time capsule were replaced with articles about the Sept. 11 tragedy, a 2001 silver dollar and a centennial celebration booklet.
Children set 100 balloons afloat, and a giant birthday cake fed all.
The church has its beginning in November 1900 when Rev. B.L. Padget and J.C. Brewington conducted a revival in the old plank school house which stood near the present church building.
One year later, in November of 1901, Padget returned with Rev. L.W. Johnson and held a second revival. On the first Sunday of December 1901, the church was
organized with 12 members.
Long Shoals Wesleyan now has 230 covenant members in its congregation.
The church operates a child care center that began 25 years ago and an academy with kindergarten through sixth grade.
