Readers’ Theatre brings holiday fare to local libraries
From staff reports
Dec. 10 - The Lincoln Theatre Guild is keeping true to their holiday tradition.
The Guild’s Readers’ Theatre will bring holiday cheer, and Santa, to Lincoln County libraries this week.
The two one-act plays are sure to usher in the holiday season with laughter, and a lesson.
“The plays are very different,” says the show’s director, Bobby Turbyfill. “One is fairy tale-like with a moral at the end, and the other one is just plain fun.”
The evening of reading will start with “Long Live Christmas,” written by Islay Benson.
The story includes Christmas fairies, a conceited King and townspeople who discover the true meaning of the Christmas spirit.
“They all realize that there’s more to the holiday than gift giving, and getting,” says Turbyfill.
“Randy the Red-Horn Rain Moose” by Rick Kilcup takes a more light-hearted approach to Christmas.
In this Cinderella-type story, Randy, who is on Santa’s janitorial staff, steps into the limelight when Rudolph’s nose is on the blink.
The Guild’s Readers’ Theatre is unlike their regular productions in that actors stand before audiences, scripts in hand, and use voice inflection to entertain
— much like radio shows of the past.
For several years, the Guild has presented Readers’ Theatre in the libraries at Christmas time. Last year “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” was performed.
This year’s cast includes more than a dozen actors, beginning with performers at age eight.
But their age certainly doesn’t affect their talent, says Turbyfill.
“They take it very seriously.”
Though there’s not a stage, and the actors aren’t wearing full costumes, Turbyfill has tried to add a little flare to make the production more pleasing to the
eyes.
“There are a few costumes and some movement,” he said, “just to keep it interesting.”
The Readers’ Theatre productions will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the East Lincoln Branch Library and Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Charles R. Jonas Library.
Refreshments will be served in between the two plays, and admission is free.
“And don’t forget to stop in and see Santa,” said Turbyfill.
Santa Claus will visit the libraries at 6:30 p.m.
