Humane Society tree honors pets

By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer

Dec. 7 - Want to show the everyone how much you love Fido or Fluffy? The Humane Society of Lincoln County can help out with its Santa Paws tree.

The tree, a five-year tradition, is the organization’s major fund-raiser. Animal lovers pay $2 to honor or memorialize a pet on a paper ornament. The tree is displayed at BB&T Bank.

“We keep it at that price so people can do a lot of pets,” said Dolores Stroupe, the organization’s publicity chairperson.

Ornaments are cut in the shape of the pet. In years past, horses, goats and crabs have adorned the tree in addition to the expected dogs and cats.

Word of the tree has gotten around, Stroupe said. Requests for places on the tree have come in from as far as Boone and Banner Elk. Charlotte’s Humane Society borrowed the name for its tree at Southpark Mall.

Donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 23, Lincolnton, N.C. 28093. Contributors should specify what type of animal is being honored or memorialized.

The non-profit organization also conducts a low cost spay and neuter clinic and places animals in adoptive homes. For more information, call 704-732-9022.

In addition to material items, the organization would like more volunteers.

“We badly need more foster homes,” member Emily Britt said.
