Outreach congregation feeds families with faith

The name reflects the mission of its members.

Lincolnton Pentecostal Holiness Church changed its name this year. Pastor Jerry Goodman feels the new name hints of the giving nature of its congregation — Redemption Outreach Center.

Members of the newly named church will address the needs of the community again this Thanksgiving by providing meals for the needy.

“I think the people have really caught on,” says Goodman. “Everything that’s here has been donated by the people of the church.”

For the fifth year, members of the congregation will gather turkeys, dressing, potatoes and all the trimmings to feed families on the upcoming holiday.

When the program began, 50 families were fed. This year the congregation will provide meals for more than 150 families.

“We want to reach out and help people in need. The Lord has blessed us,” says Goodman. “The more we give out, the more it comes in. You can’t out give God.”

Giving isn’t always easy, says Goodman. Many members of the congregation struggle to put food on their own tables.

“I saw a lady the other day who gave to sponsor several families and her husband has been out of work for a while,” Goodman says.

Members of the congregation find the experience rewarding, says Goodman

Meals will be handed out Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In preparation for distribution day, a list of needy families is compiled. Those who show up without calling may not receive meals due to high demand.

Distribution is on a first come, first serve basis.

Names of needy families are provided by congregation members, Christian Ministry, Social Services, Helping Hands and call-ins. Goodman says the origin of the names is not important. He and members of the congregation simply want people to enjoy the holiday.

Goodman feels the social element of Thanksgiving provides as much nourishment as the food in their stomachs.

“Thanksgiving is a family time, and it would be sad for a family not to be able to get together for that traditional meal,” he says.
