Churches plan third annual Alternative Gift Market

November 1, 2002 - With Christmas tinsel and toys already beckoning holiday shoppers, two Lincolnton churches are offering a one-day gift market designed to focus more on the concept of giving than on the gifts.

“The kids are the ones who really love it,” says J. Nelson-Weaver, a volunteer with this year’s Alternative Gift Market. “It is a very simple way for them to learn what Christmas is all about.”

Denver artist crafts copper creations

November 8, 2002 - DENVER — Neal Taylor considers his craft more than a hobby — it’s a passion.

The 58-year-old Denver man discovered his hidden talent one day on his home from work.

Neal Taylor uses his torch to form a bird atop a copper fountain in his shop. The craftsman creates functional and artistic sculptures from sheets and wires of copper. The shelves of his shop are filling up with his craft. (LTN photos by Diane Turbyfill)

Violent deaths prompt outreach program at LHS

Students deal with long-term hurt

November 22, 2002 - Amber Lawson wanted to do something meaningful.

In the span of nine days, Lawson, 15, a sophomore at Lincolnton High School, lost one friend to domestic violence and watched another grieve over the loss of her mother from a similar incident.

A Cultural Center Christmas

November 29, 2002 - The Lincoln Arts Council, Lincoln Cultural Center and Lincoln County Museum of History will kick off the holiday season Sunday, Dec. 8.

The threefold event will include a holiday homes tour, an open house and an exhibit opening.

November 29, 2002 - The Midget squad received 2nd place in the Cheer Division of 11-12-year-old girls. Both squads were presented a "Best Crowd Support" plaque. Winning Teams

November 29, 2002 - The Pumpkin Center Panthers Peewee and Midget Cheerleading squads recently completed a weekend of competitions bringing home several trophies and awards. The Peewee squad won 1st place in the 7-8 yr. old division at the Greater Gaston Cheer-off at Gaston Day School. At Gardner Webb University, the Panther Peewee Squad received top honors when they named the 2002 Southland Peewee Champions. They competed against 10 Peewee teams from the Southland League. Coaches are Dawn Reep, Lori Swink, and Cindy Haynes.
