Home tour, museum exhibit kick off in December

A Cultural Center Christmas

By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer

November 29, 2002 - The Lincoln Arts Council, Lincoln Cultural Center and Lincoln County Museum of History will kick off the holiday season Sunday, Dec. 8.

The threefold event will include a holiday homes tour, an open house and an exhibit opening.

The Arts Council will have its first ever Starlight Christmas Home Tour.

Six homes around Lincolnton will be featured.

Kay and Dan Barefoot’s home — deemed “Night of a Thousand Lights” — will be lit up for the occasion. The doors to the South Aspen Street home will be open, revealing 14 rooms, three bathrooms and a full basement, constructed in 1936 for noted local physician Dr. Lester A. Crowell Jr. Tour patrons will be treated to a dozen lighted Christmas trees, each decorated with a different theme.

Marni and Scott Carpenter’s Laboratory home will take viewers “Over the River and Through the Woods.” The richly-ornamented Victorian house was built in 1894 by Daniel E. Rhyne. From the front porch to the wide roof and balcony, the home is an elaborate example of the Victorian style found in Lincoln County.

Holly and Dennis Perkins’ East Congress Street home will bring “Visions of Sugar Plums” to their guests eyes. The Victorian-style home was built in 1900 by M.J. Matthias. From the purple exterior to the pantry pass-through, the designers present a jazzy, charming mood.

Kae and Michael Wright have decorated their North Cedar Street home with the theme “Starry, Starry Night.” Their lawn already shows signs of the theme with large stars and Christmas decorations scattered about. The home once served as the parsonage to First Baptist Church.

Vici and Don Snyder’s North Laurel Street home follows the theme “Elf Night.” The two-story brick home, built in 1928, is filled with elves as far as the eye can see. Christmas trees will be topped with elves and replicas of Old Saint Nick will be tucked away in windowsills and stairways.

The Lincoln Cultural Center will be the last home on the tour. Large Christmas trees will be on display and refreshments will be served.

The Cultural Center’s Gift Shop will kick off it’s extended holiday hours during the event.

The Lincoln County Museum of History will open its new exhibit “In the Grain.”

The museum will be filled with the furniture of Augustus Pinkney and Edgar James, 1860-1930.

The exhibit is presented by the Museum of History and the Lincoln County Historical Association. The pieces encompass an array of styles from Empire to arts and crafts, featuring a mid-19th century Empire China Press, Victorian Renaissance Revival Bed and Arts and Crafts Tables, all solid walnut made in Lincolnton.

The artwork of Eva James from the 1950s will also be featured.

All of the events will be Sunday, Dec. 8 from 4 to 9 p.m.

Tickets to the home tour are $12 each and may be purchased in advance at the Cultural Center Gift Shop or at the homes on tour day.

Admission to the museum exhibit is free.
